ALIA Special Libraries (SA)
July-December 2001 report
Special Libraries South Australia is committed to discuss and disseminate information on issues affecting those working in, and associated with, special libraries in South Australia.
It offers a forum for professional and personnel development, networking opportunities, promotion, and exchange of ideas and solutions through its active program. It will raise members awareness of new initiatives, offer support to those with an interest in special libraries and represent members nationally and internationally by providing appropriate comment on issues affecting them.
The Committee consists of:

Currently the Group consists of 144 members from South Australia and from every other state in Australia as well as from overseas. The Group is focused on South Australia and will not be facilitating any functions interstate or overseas and some of our members will gain very little benefit from belong to our Group. These members may have joined Special Libraries SA due to the lack of a National Special Libraries Group.
The Committee has spent the first six months establishing the new Group and developing plans for future activities and moving towards achieving its purpose and goals. The Committee meets every six weeks rather than monthly which was originally planned, to discuss national and local issues.
An e-mail list has been established and is maintained by the Secretary, to communicate with members. Members without e-mail access receive correspondence via mail.
The Group has held a variety of activities in the period July-December 2001. They are:

Networking libraries, consortia, electronic subscriptions and licensing agreements in the USA seminar presented by Judith Schaeffer Young from the Wills Eye Hospital in Pennsylvania, USA. 5 September 2001 Judith Schaeffer Young came to Australia to speak at the Special Health and Law Libraries Conference in Melbourne and came to South Australia on holidays. 22 participants.

Presented by Di Thompson, Library Manager, Legal Services Commission of SA and Catherine Irving, Legal Education Officer, Legal Services Commission of SA.

Christmas function. Thursday 29 November 2001
A Christmas social function will be held on Thursday 29 November 2001. Members will purchase their own refreshments.
10th Asia Pacific Special Health and Law Librarians Conference
Group members have also been heavily involved with the 10th Asia Pacific Special Health and Law Librarians Conference to be held in Adelaide, South Australia in August 2003. All Group members were invited to join the Organising Committee; to convene sub committees; to assist with the conference program; publicity; sponsorship; web page etc. Members have also assisted with developing the theme and logo for the Conference and selecting the professional conference organiser. This has all been done in conjunction with the ALIA SA Health Libraries Group and the Australian Law Librarians Group (SA Division).
Committee members volunteer their time and use their employees facilities to e-mail members, receive and record payments and generally operate the Group.
