5. Reports
5.1 Convenor's report
5.1.1 Year in retrospective
April
In April members of the specials and other ALIA groups celebrated International Special Librarian Day (ISLD). Rachel Teesdale-Smith and Marie Francis organised a visit to Michael Treloar Antiquarian Bookshop and refreshments at the Balaena Cafe. An event well received.
May
In May the ALIA Special Libraries SA group put a motion before the ALIA 2004 AGM jointly with the ALIA One Person Australian Libraries (OPAL) national group. The motion was defeated in favour of Trevor Wakely's motion. The positive outcome of the Specials SA - OPALs action was to have arisen a lively debate within ALIA groups.
July
In July Silvia Muscardin, Vicki Richardson (ALLG Rep), and Marie Francis introduced the ALIA Special Libraries SA to the members of Mentoring SA. The ALIA forum on purchasing agreements and licensing, held on 29 July, was organised jointly with ALIA SA and the law libraries groups. A very stimulating event, very well co-ordinated by Philip Keane. Silvia Muscardin, specials convenor, was one of the speakers.
October-November
In October-November the ALIA Specials Libraries SA group was invited to participate in first stage of the review of the ALIA Education Policy statements.
August
The Committee held its first online meeting in August. The group elected to make use of the ALIAnet standard chat room 'sa' for its meetings. The first draft of the guidelines on virtual meetings was well tested in that first attempt. The second virtual meeting held in November ran smoothly thanks to the amended guidelines.

- 'Managing up': basic strategies and skills to communicate effectively with the parent organisation's senior management, and strategies for difficult situations.
- The role of the human resources manager and emotional intelligence.
20 April
International Special Librarian Day (ISLD): CPD compliant event
and social event.
March-April
Joint event with ALIA SA: Presenting groups to TAFE students.
December

Continue to liaise with regional members. Fostering of regional member participation where possible. The attendance of Kathleen Nugent from Mt Gambier at the AGM is acknowledged. Kathleen was able to more fully participate in committee discussion and decisions during the year due to the introduction of online meetings.
5.2 Treasurer's report
Nothing to report.
5.3 Australian Law Librarian's Group (SA Division) report
Highlights for the ALLG(SA Division) for this year have been :
- A range of social functions including Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast, pizza lunch in the Federal Court, a tour of the newly refurbished University of Adelaide Law Library and a very popular end-of-financial-year dinner at Parliament House.
- A session on international law by the University of Adelaide law librarian.
- Grant McAvaney's (from Minter Ellison) law for law librarian's seminar on media law.
- A talk by the SA supreme court registrar on court registry procedure.
- A full day seminar on negotiation skills for law librarians on 5 August which gave us some very practical tips on communication and negotiation with management.
- The 2004 Law Librarian's Symposium which was held in Canberra from 29 September to 1 October. A feedback session was held at the Law Society during the following week for those who couldn't attend to catch up on the news and events.
- The AGM was held on November 24. The major item for consideration was incorporation of the ALLG (SA Division). We then had a BBQ on the balcony.
5.4 ALIA SALT representative report
The minutes from the SALT meetings for 2004 reflect the preparations made for the big birthday bash celebrating SALT's 25th anniversary.
Through careful planning and detective work we compiled a database of library technicians who graduated over the last 25 years, hopefully capturing the majority of names.
A venue was chosen - the Lakes Resort at West Lakes. Speakers were contacted, gifts of engraved wine glasses organised for all attendees, menus finalised. It was a very successful and fitting occasion commemorating 25 years of SALT. A data show depicting library technicians over the last 25 years was a highlight.
Other events held in 2004 included:
SALT was represented at the library technician graduation in May.
National Library Technician Day which was celebrated with enthusiasm at the Bombay Bicycle Club.
There were some low points during the year with the untimely deaths of some library friends and mentors : John Matthews, Dexter Palmer and Vicki Macmillan.
2005 will see a completely different style of meeting for SALT. We are changing to occasional social dinners, with the emphasis more on the networking than business. One major CPD activity will be planned along with a couple of library tours.
