Meeting minutes

8:10am 3 June 2004 at Se-Juiced, cnr Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide.

1. Present

Tanya Hook, Silvia Muscardin, Vicki Richardson, Catherine Daniel, Benjamin Wheal, Jackie Williams, Christopher Ridler, Andrew Meier, Philip Keane

2. Meeting open

8:10am

3. Apologies

Kate Sinclair, Marie Francis, Rachel Teesdale-Smith

4. Minutes of the previous meeting

Accepted.

5. Business arising from the minutes

5.1 ALIA AGM Update

  • The original motion was defeated by a motion by Trevor Wakely which was more general and allowed for greater flexibility
  • NSW Group to host 2005 and WA Group to host 2007
  • Law and Health groups regretted not being more involved with motion

5.2 Committee more visible

  • General consensus that this has been successful: specials e-newsletter, updated web-pages and name badges

5.3 2004 Events

  • ALIA SA joint event on Co-operative Purchasing (ALIA SA, Health, Law): Wednesday 28 July (Philip and Rachel). Full day $100.00 for members and $130.00 for non-members. Sue Rotcliffe to speak on virtual reference. Philip said that the event should provide an excellent chance to talk to vendors one on one about things like licenses, embargoes, etc.
  • Joint Spec-Law event on Copyright (Vicki). This will now be a Copyright Council Training Day: 4 sessions on Tuesday 16 November and will be run be the Law Group.

5.4 Special/Law Event

  • Workplace relations between special library and parent organisation management (Rachel and Silvia). Workshop to focus on opening channels of communication between library personnel and management. Similar event being run by Law Group - their speaker might be of use to the Specials Group.
  • Anticipated date: Thursday 5 August. Location: Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library. Format: seminar/case study followed by a workshop
  • Too often special library staff are caught in a working relationship with the management of the parent organisation that could be defined as dysfunctional. The seminar/workshop seeks to investigate channels of communication between special library professionals and the parent organisation managers.
  • Rachel and Silvia seek advice and assistance from the group. (This section had to be omitted due to time constraints. Silvia and Rachel will e-mail the committee members in due course).
  • The option of running the event jointly with the Law Library Group, who are organising a similar event, was judged not feasible, as Law Librarians operate in a homogenous environment, dissimilar to the one of Special Libraries.

5.5 Library Tour and AGM

  • The Committee agreed that the two events can be combined.
  • Place and format: Tour of the Migration Museum, 82 Kintore Avenue Adelaide, followed by AGM and refreshments (in that order) at the Chapel Café, just next door.
  • Anticipated Date: Thursday 25 November.
  • Anticipated time: Guided tour of the Museum: 4:00pm (1-hour tour)
  • AGM: 5:00pm-5:30pm. Refreshments: 5:30pm-7:00pm

6. Correspondence

6.1 Correspondence In: None

6.2Correspondence Out: None

7. Reports

7.1 Treasurer's report

  • Tanya refunded money for gift purchase.

7.2 Law Librarians' report

7.3 SALT Report

  • Committee members are still busy organising celebrations for the 25th SALT anniversary in October 2004

7.4 ALIA SA Report

  • John Stanley to present a half day workshop on marketing in late August

8. New Business

8.1 Events for 2005

  • Everyone to think about events for next year
  • Philip Keane suggested the Heritage Office of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, that was transformed from an archive to a small museum by the present curator.

9. Any other business

Silvia raised the issue of committee members being overloaded and asked that all members please notify the committee if they need time off.
