Professional Development Event Melbourne - April 2006

Laura Foley
Group co-ordinator, Victoria

There was a great turn-out on the 6 of April this year, on a wet and cold Melbourne evening, for the Professional Development Information night hosted by the ALIA New Graduates Group (NGG) of Victoria.

Held at the at the Swanston Library at RMIT in the city, the event brought together four speakers involved in the various stages of the ALIA Professional Development scheme.

The ALIA rep

The first speaker was Margie Anderson, the ALIA Victorian Local Liaison Officer, who brought her professional knowledge as well as ALIA enthusiasm to chat about the history of the (formally Continuing) Professional Development Scheme and all the associated nitty-gritty.

Margie also offered to run Career Development Kit workshops for interested people, which is something the NGG is looking to offer in Victoria at some stage.

The ALIA Career Development Kit is a great way of identifying and prioritising your skills and aims during your library career, and can be completed at any stage, and any number of times.

Margie's informative Powerpoint presentation can be accessed here [496kb ppt].

The newcomer

Jenny Corbin followed Margie, as a person relatively new to the Professional Development Scheme. She related her story of how keen she was when she first started collecting professional development points as a way of keeping up-to-date while working part-time or being overseas with her husband's job. However when an ALIA audit hit her at a busy time in her life, she panicked.

With extra time and the support of Jill Yvanovich at ALIA Head Office, Jenny submitted a successful response and learned how to more effectively organise herself to keep record of her PD points.

Jenny provided some very handy and practical tips for maintaining sufficient records of achievement within the PD Scheme. Hints included simple things such as keeping confirmation of attendance to any appropriate events, by storing in a special PD email or hardcopy folder.

The associate fellowship

Veronica Delafosse represented the rewards of completing three years of the ALIA Professional Development Scheme. Along with the post-nominals and certificate, the process of achieving an associate fellowship boosted her role as a librarian in a health library. She recommended the PD scheme as a great indicator to use at performance reviews within her organization.

Veronica strongly reiterated Jenny's point of keeping track of your PD points as you go to make it much easier to collate at the end of the financial year. She seemed to find that once organised and set-up, continuing the associate fellowship for another three years, is just part of a simple routine.

The PD provider

The final presenter for the evening was Richard Sayers from CAVAL who not only holds an Associate Fellowship, but also promoted the means of continuing professional development. The courses run by CAVAL aim to be practical and for use in the real world, while at the same time being recognised for PD Scheme points.

Richard found that from experience, short courses and professional development achievements are ideal indicators for librarians who are managed by non-librarians to recognise their skills.

CAVAL have discounts for students, NewGrad and unemployed librarians for courses, while ALIA members can get 10% off the price.

All speakers emphasised the small amount of effort in being recognised for the continuing professional development that most of us in the library industry do every day. By using their practical tips to organise your records, an Associate Fellowship from ALIA is only three years away for us all!
