Interview Skills seminar
New Graduates Group Victoria on Oct 15 at RMIT Swanston Library
Powerpoint Presentation [.ppt | 656KB ]
Just as popular as the previous 'Resume and Key Selection Criteria writing' seminar, we had 24 keen job hunters attend this seminar held at RMIT Swanston Library on Oct 15th.
3 presenters, Brad King (One Umbrella), Andrea Webster (Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries Rosanna Library) and Valma Datson (RMIT Bundoora Library) kindly shared their expert knowledge on how best to be prepared for the second hurdle the INTERVIEW.
Before the interview:
- Ask yourself, "Why am I going for this job?"
- Make sure you contact your referees that you're applying for a job It's not looking good when the interviewer calls your referee and s/he has no idea that you listed his/her name as a referee
- Get there early, but not too early about 5-10 minutes to the appointment time
- Check the location you may know where the library is, but check the address where the interview will be held. It could be at a different branch library or HR/Administration site
- Don't smoke just before the interview (for smokers) chewing gum won't remove smoker breath
wait till it's finished
- Remember, interviewer(s) may be nervous too! It could be their first time conducting an interview
Internal positions
- Treat as same as the external job interview
- Don't assume that the interviewers know what you do in the organisation
During the interview:
- Be yourself & be honest don't pretend something you're not, you won't be able to keep pretending if you get the job
- First impression count positive body language & eye contact
- Challenging questions it's chance to show your skills to handle difficult situations
- If you're not sure about the questions, don't be afraid to ask for clarification
- Do your homework check organisation's homepage & learn about the organisation to show your interest
- Negotiating your salary it's NOT the time!
After the interview:
- Reflect "Can I work at the organisation?", "Do I fit in?"
- "Do I want to work there?" "Does the organisation fit in with my values?" remember you are interviewing them (the organisation) as well
- Feedback it's okay to ask feedbacks if you didn't get the job. It's a trial and error process to find the job (you want)
- Sending thank you letter/email leave a good impression, you never know whether you'll apply for another position at the same organisation
- Don't resign (your current position) till you get the written offer!
- Negotiating your salary now it IS the time, if you're offered the job
