ALIA New Graduates Group: The social pagesQld CSU LIS student - Gold Coast libraries tourSaturday 28 August 2004 Sharon Uthmann (QUT) Rowena Brannigan and I knew it was going to be one of those days when I went looking for Rachel Crowe house at number 1 instead of number 27. Regardless, we managed to find Rachel's house and embarked on our journey to the Gold Coast - first stop, Springwood McCafé for breakfast!!! Did you know that the exit numbers, for example exit 66, on the M1 indicate how many kilometres you are from Brisbane? Useless information to add to your file, but we still managed to miss exit 62 - maybe we were so caught up in our discussion about drivers not using the 4 lanes appropriately that we missed it. It meant for a scenic drive. We arrived at the Gaven stop for the Gold Coast Mobile Library at 9:45am. Shirley greeted us and gave us a tour of the mobile. They certainly have got larger since they first started. Apparently, a number of other city council's have modeled theirs on the same mobile. From there we ventured to Nerang branch library, and then took a detour to Burleigh Heads branch to annoy Janet Dickman who had to work there during the morning. A morning tea break was required after the busy morning. We headed across to the kiosk at Burleigh Heads and admired - well really didn't admire - the tourist who went swimming when it's still cold. Once Janet had finished work, we followed the speeding Elizabeth Harvey, to Robina library. Excellent news for us was that directly across from the library, at the gallery, was a display on children's fiction illustration artists. So not only did we get to see an excellent library, but also reminisce about Ginger Megs, Pudding Magic etc. Lunch was a necessity so Robina Shopping Centre provided. Southport library was buzzing when we arrived at 2:30pm. It only allowed for a hour tour, but it was enough. It seemed to be the busiest of the branch libraries we visited, and on closing time it's hard to make people leave. Southport library brought an end to our tour day! And what a day it was. Catching up with the gang again and taking in the sights some fresh new (well for some of us) libraries. Thanks to Elizabeth Harvey and Janet Dickman for allowing us to use them as tour guides for the day. Stay tuned for the next Qld CSU LIS Student event!
