ALIA New Graduates GroupKey Selection CriteriaNovember 2007, Mebourne Laura Foley & Michelle Thomason Presented by the ALIA New Graduates Group Victorian Branch Over 40 attendees were treated to a wealth of tips and tricks in the thorny world of Key Selection Criteria (KSC). The format involved a brief introduction to our three experts: Ian Smith, Mieke Mellers and Jenny Baran. Each panellist had selected a recent KSC to comment on and critique, in terms of how they would prefer applicants to respond to each item. One brave audience member had submitted their own KSC application anonymously which was also examined by the panellists. Ian Smith, the Manager of Library Human Resources at LaTrobe University, prepared some fantastic notes for his presentation. Ian looked at the Government Librarian position for the Australian Public Service and highlighted the pertinent words within the KSC on one slide. Mieke Mellers, the Library Operations Co-ordinator at Hume Global Learning Village, provided a wonderful insight into the application process in public libraries. Mieke responded to the Public Library Team Leader KSC. Jenny Baran, a Recruitment Consultant with The One Umbrella, gave the valuable perspective of someone who deals with KSC every day. She provided feedback on applying for a Copyright Adviser position. Along with a stunning list of tips for responding to KSC, available here, Jenny also highly recommended the book by Villiers “How to address selection criteria” – available at all good public libraries and bookstores. Aside from these great resources from the panellists, they also mentioned a number of useful points in the discussion. Bullet-points were strongly recommended by some recruiters for succinctness and ease of reading, while others acknowledged that good grammar and prose in a KSC response can demonstrate communication skills. Again, the length of the KSC response can vary from recruiter to recruiter with 3 sentences preferred by some and a third of a page suggested by others. What was very clear was that applicants should make sure they address each KSC with a positive statement covering all facets of each criteria and at least one example to support the claim. One additional point made by the panellists is that there is an increasing trend in employers linking their interview questions to the KSC of the position – another handy tip on your road to successfully getting that job! The audience had a lot of information to absorb and one Newgrad blogger, Gemma Siemensma, talks about it here. Finally the Vic NGG convenors, Michelle Thomason and Laura Foley, would like to give expression their thanks and gratitude to Craig Anderson, Monika, Trish and the RMIT Library for their generous provision of the venue and catering.
