Round table

Each institute reported on the major developments and current issues.

VUT

External programmer has been employed to address patches and fixes that have developed overtime in their off-air recording online system. There is also anew branded interface for the system.

Library staff mainly burn from online copy of programme. There is still a preference for the burned DVD rather than the streamed version.

Presently they are running a trial an online video streaming provider with over 230 titles. Tom will provide more details and feedback on this trial at the next meeting

VUT is also looking at the use of digital signage in Universities. They would like to see if thin plasma and LCD displays used in shopping centres could be used in Universities to provide systematic information bulletins to students. This could be useful all year round but particularly on open and orientation days.

Monash

It was reported that Monash has started lending DVDs on a 2 week loan period.

There is to be a major refurbishment of the Monash library and this will impact on the music and multimedia area. A major question they are facing is what should be kept on close access and what should be made available on the open shelves. The refurbishments may not be complete until 2008.

It was also reported that Monash now has trialed a number of online audio databases from Alexander Street music listening services. Including: African American Song, Classical Music Library and Smithsonian Global Sound.

Monash now subscribe to African American Song, Classical Music Library and Smithsonian Global.
The University of Melbourne also subscribes to CML and Smithsonian Global (AV)

La Trobe University

The online recorded lectures are to be delivered and recorded using iLectures. The commander system which is used to deliver reserve materials to staff and students is in need for updating. VUT offered some of their superseded equipment and was eagerly accepted by La Trobe.

La Trobe are now participants in the Arrow Institutional repository system development. The initial focus will be on linking / mapping the system to the requirements of Research Quality Framework (RQF) to track research output.

The existing library image database will be decommissioned at the end of 2007 when the Luna Insight production system is implemented. This will dramatically improve the range of digital image collections available to clients and provide them will a range of tools to incorporate digital images into Webct. In the longer term it is planned that the Insight database will be able to communicate with the Arrow repository implementation.

Demonstrated DVD and CD cleaner. Cleaned up heavily scratched dvd provide by Melbourne Uni. Disc Wizard series II (cost$2,500)

University of Melbourne

It was reported that there has been little development of the Digital Access Management system (Digitool) due to the current realignment. It is still expected that proof of concept will be completed by the end of 2006.

Next meeting

Next meeting will be held at RMIT or VCA November - December 2006. Notification will be sent via e-mail.
