Round table

Each institute reported on the major developments and current issues.

VUT

Off-air recording system is an online system and they have abandoned traditional mode of recording. Recordings are now scheduled by users (academic and library staff). Academics and library staff now have the ability to burn their own copies of programmes from the centralized server. Both streamed and DVD quality version are available. The streamed versions are made available via Learning Edge system. There is also a move to transfer older off-air videos onto DVD.

SBS Television is being recorded 24/7 and kept for approximately 2 weeks.

RMIT

It was reported that RMIT was piloting streaming media over the next couple of months. The media will be delivered via Quicktime from a Helix server.
Reported a large number of requests for off-airs being made from other RMIT campuses. They have been undertaking major weeding projects. There has also been a map digitization project endeavouring to deliver these items online.

VCA

Off-air recording not setup and looking at closer cooperation with University of Melbourne to provide access to these resources. There will be a merger of VCA and University of Melbourne 2007. It was reported that some of the technology at VCA needed to be updated. Exciting times for VCA

Monash

Off-air recordings very low number of requests
Discussion of lending policies relating to audio visual materials and in particular DVDs. At the moment DVDs are only available for inhouse use.

La Trobe University

Latrobe has just gone through sampling process by Screenrights. This was seen as fairly straight forward and not too painful.
Luna image database was purchased by La Trobe and is being implemented. New collections have been added to the database, Art History and Anatomy. Metadata services overseeing the input of data from academics. Describing the data and input is a long process.

University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne have purchased Digitool and have been testing this out. Still little progress due to the realignment currently underway.
It was reported that Media Collections technical support would be delivered by a new unit called Digital Media Services no longer part of Media Collections.

Andrew demonstrated the new Digital Access Management (Digitool) system. This database provides access to a variety of digital items including print, images, audio, video. The metadata will be searchable via the library catalogue. Digitool also provides access management to particular items and includes all required statistical requirements for licensing bodies.

Meeting progressed into round table discussion of copyright issues, pod-casting news and DVD issues.

Next meeting Next meeting will be held at Melbourne at the end of July 2006. Notification will be send via e-mail.
