Apologies Agenda
1. Minutes of previous meetingAccepted 2. RoundtableLa Trobe University La Trobe has commenced a trial of Luna. Luna is a file sharing system of digital resources. Material can be manipulated into groups and lecturers are able to input material independently after initial training. It will be mostly used for images but it can accommodate video and audio. There has been an increase in the demand of off-air recordings as now this service is advertised to the clients. University of Melbourne Melbourne are looking into DIGITOOL which is a digital repository system including a digital asset management component. They are also investigating subscription options to cable television and are trialling a DVD storage/dispenser unit at their loans desk. Some reserve audiovisual materials (off-air recordings) are now available online via streaming as well as in hardcopy dvd. The demand for the online version is growing particularly for documentary titles. Melbourne is currently streaming 300 music pieces online. These have been recorded from radio. Material are listed via webpage however digital audio and video will be searchable via the library catalogue once Digitool has been established. VUT Tom Lecaric and Asim Aziz provided a demonstration of the Learning Edge system and the automation of off-air television recording. More information further on in the minutes. 3. DVD security and repair issueThere was a general discussion on the DVD fragility and repair. It was reported that at the University of Melbourne had a large number of tattled DVDs stolen from its open shelves. The collection has now been moved to a more secure location. It seems that no university has purchased a disk repairing machine and rely on outside providers for this service. The number of repairable discs didn't warrant the large expenditure required for a disk repair machine. 4. Learning Edge system (digital repository system)Tom Lecaric and Asim Aziz from VUT provided the group with an overview of the Learning Edge digital repository system. As most universities are looking at these types of repositories for their digital media collections it was very topical and useful to have a look at this system. Demonstration When off-air recordings are created they are transferred straight into Learning Edge for online access. Material can be search by subject or channel. At the moment approx 20-25 staff are using Learning Edge for material. In the future individual departments can be made owners and input content directly into it. It was reported that Learning Edge is an Australian company and because of that it is developing an online streaming system that will comply with CAUL. It is believed that the copyright module will be ready by October 2005. Learning Edge can cope with many individual needs, i.e. WebCT, off-air recordings, e-reserve and video and audio lectures. 5. VUT trial of automated off-air recording serviceTom then provided us with an overview of the developments that had taken place with the automation of VUT's off-air television broadcast recording service. It was illustrated that with the appropriate server (Windows), large storage capabilities and appropriate software an enormous amount of automation can be incorporated into the requesting, scheduling and streaming of digital video resources. The VUT system also provides academics with the ability to request materials online and have the item streamed automatically within a couple hours after the broadcast, with very little human intervention. This system also provides a method of creating clips or segments for delivery through Learning Management Systems. VUT record all SBS programmes and will start recording ABC programmes soon. A program is deleted after 10 days if it does not get requested by an academic. Recording from cable television is only done by request. They have uploaded the electronic program schedule which they subscribe to. Lecturers can request an off-air recording copy online. It was demonstrated how lecturers and the library staff can automatically download their required program. It was mentioned that they were also currently trialling online lectures. 6. Other businessIt was reported that Emily Cavanagh will be the new Monash University representative and Georgina Binns who has taken up the position as the Victorian College of the Arts librarian will be the VCA representative. Andrew reported that all the minutes from MICTG are available at the ALIA website. Next meeting
