Round table

Each Institution reported on the major things they had been dealing with over the past 6 months. It was great to have Tom, Rebecca, Allison and John attend for the first time.

VUT
Tom Loncaric from VUT outlined his role as in Technology and Media Services Unit Teaching Space Support and a project that he is working on to enable the automation of requesting, scheduling and recording off-air television broadcasts for streaming. Tom agreed to report on developments in this project with perhaps a demonstration at our next meeting in December 2004.

La Trobe University

Ted Chrisfield reported that he had been working on aspects of improving off-campus delivery of lectures and looking at the course delivery mechanisms for digital media resources. Ted said that Silicon Graphics was undertaking an audit of current practices relating to digital resources and activities and will be providing La Trobe with an strategic planning document. More will be revealed at the next meeting.

Maria Ammazzalorso reported that they have been dealing with issues relating to their microfilm reader/printers as well as doing a lot of off-air recording both free to air and cable television. Maria also mentioned that La Trobe was looking at organising the demonstration of a DVD disk cleaning machine and if anyone else that was interested could come along. Andrew indicated that Uni Melb was interested in the demonstration. Any others interested in the demonstration can contact Maria.

RMIT
Andi Pasqualini reported that RMIT were finding it difficult to get support from the library for streaming digital media resources. They have a project related to video lecture streaming and have had very favourable feedback so far. Much of their time recently has been spent promoting their audio visual services and dealing with the day to day function of the audio visual section.

University of Melbourne
Andrew reported that Media Collections at Melbourne were doing a lot of work in the area of audio and video streaming for course delivery and trying to free up more space for collection growth.

ALIA and MICTG
MICTG has now been endorsed by ALIA. This will provide greater exposure of the group throughout Australia. The MICTG webpages will be hosted by ALIA in the future. More information will follow.

Technical group contacts and communication

It was recommended that the names and e-mail addresses of all technical staff who provide support or technical advice to media or audio visual sections be sent to Andrew. This would encourage better communication between technical staff and MICTG also encourage greater communication within the technical group.

Digital media resources (demo)

University of Melbourne gave a short overview and demonstration of media streaming resources they had created over the past 3 to 4 years. Started out with digitising audio taped lectures and then went onto a large music (audio) digitsing project which will be incorporated into the music reserve through the library catalogue.

Demonstrated music and video streaming resources. Also reported that cataloguing of these resources will be a major consideration over the next 6 months. Digital access management tool will be in the near future to upload digital assets and create associated metadata.

Other business

Ted also reported that the copyright officer at La Trobe had indicated that any off-air recording dated pre1990 could be used in the same way as material that was recorded after 1990. If you require more information on this please contact Andrew or Ted.

Ted has suggested that an audio visual copyright forum be held to exchange information and practices at the different institutions. This will be put on the agenda of our next meeting.

There was also some discussion about the use of metadata and audio visual digital objects. Andrew will approach metadata group to discuss what the issues are as they relate to digital audio visual resources.

Tour of Media Collections

Andrew gave a tour of Media Collections at Melbourne.

Next Meeting

December 2004 at La Trobe University.
