Other business

The 'local history holdings on microfiche' list has been finished by Paul Michell of Darebin and Booroondara will be next. Moonee Valley need to do some adjustments, to reflect the split of Hume Moonee Valley.

Around the table

Anne Burrows - State Library of Victoria

  • Five staff in the genie team. School programs to encourage use of the genie service.
  • Attended Bairnsdale cemetery seminar in October to promote and preserve cemeteries.
  • Will be speaking at conference in Mildura and may have a stall. Will be publishing the Tetlow index of names in the Cole index.
  • Has been doing a lot of talks in the new centre.

Kathy Smalley - ERL

  • Has done talks to Probus and retirement groups.
  • In house training of staff.
  • There are now three genealogy groups in the area.
  • Kathy commented about the lack of local history books being published.

Robyn Luczynski - Moonee Valley (Sam Merrifield)

  • Robyn has done some in house training for staff.
  • Penola Catholic College are researching in the local history room on Moonee Ponds Creek.
  • Libraries will be closed for a week when the new system is installed.

Heather McKay - YMRL (North Melbourne)

  • Compiling a list of councillors in North Melbourne for 100-year anniversary of being returned to City of Melbourne.
  • History of Royal Park Golf Club to be launched.
  • Attended St Michael's Walk, a walk around the area of St Michael's Catholic Church in North Melbourne.
  • Kevin Wong Hoy to do a talk on Chinese miners in the library.

Marie Linton - YMRL (Fitzroy)

  • Applied for a grant from the National Library but did not get it.
  • The local history forum had a photographic exhibition which was well attended. It was held at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in East Melbourne and the book of the last lot of talks, Rural Remnants was launched.
  • East Melbourne and Richmond will be re-developed.

Lina Favrin - Yarra Melbourne (Fitzroy)

  • CD-ROM's of photos have been returned including a book of the photos scanned. Now has the Collingwood rate books.
  • Work placement student is making a database of mayors and councillors from the original mayor's books.

Marnie Weinrich - YMRL (Richmond)

  • Replacing Melissa Gilmour while she is on maternity leave.
  • The Collingwood rate books have been moved from Richmond to Fitzroy as it is more logical. Collingwood does not have micrographic equipment.

Elaine Craig - Whitehorse Manningham

  • Spydus has been installed, not without some problems.
  • Elaine applied for a National Library heritage grant but has not heard as yet.
  • Elaine ran some classes for the City of Monash Library staff as they have resources but no family or local history staff.

Vicki Court -Whitehorse Manningham, RHSV

  • Her local history database has been out of action since June and will hopefully be back on line the following week.
  • Promoting MC2 for local history groups to advertise and communicate, as part of this will be visiting Dunkeld and Churchill.
  • Has been to Ballarat for a joint history conference. Has acquired a server at RHSV but needs some IT work.
  • RHSV database should be properly online.
  • Then to set up Victorian local history database.
  • RHSV virtual library of local history. There is a survey of how LH groups use IT and a report of this is in MC2.

Paul Michell - Darebin

  • Has also applied for a National Library Grant but hasn't heard as yet.
  • Display at Bundoora Homestead with 48 people to hear the talk.
  • CAVAL metadata system makes databases internet ready.
  • Activities for March and April, walk in Northcote and a book on pubs.
  • Include more collections from local history societies.
  • Spydus conversion has had some problems.

Michael Smith - Moonee Valley (Niddrie)

  • Niddrie is moving to Keilor Road Shopping Centre.
  • Headquarters will be above the branch as it is currently in Sunbury.
  • New library system due.

Claire Sandell - Casey Cardinia

  • Liaises with 12 local history groups.
  • Pearcedale has just produced a book.
  • Local history groups are using MC2 for communication.
  • Berwick has produced a heritage walk.
  • There is a new branch in Hampton Park so Claire is doing some research for that.
  • There also an Honour Avenue project.
  • There is more information on the website.

Kay Rowan -Port Phillip

  • Has also done in house training.
  • 30th anniversary of the St Kilda Library.
  • 2 walks for Port Phillip around South Melbourne.
  • Also did research for walks that were unfortunately cancelled.
  • Has also given talks for Elwood College, Port Melbourne Historical Society, Life Activity Class and Grade 1 students.
  • New Port Melbourne Library opens December.
  • Kay is the only one left in art and heritage so divided into curatorial service and local history services (which is Kay).

Janine Smith - Moreland

  • Based at Coburg.
  • Is updating Pathfinders for genealogy.
  • Training staff for familiarisation with genealogy resources.
