ALIA WA Library Technicians
June 2002 report
Report to the WALT group from the WALT Graduate Mentoring Program (WALTGMP)
24 June 2002
The Graduate Mentoring Programme for library technicians has been successfully revived this year. A group of eight library technicians made up of facilitators and mentorees meet monthly to accomplish learning needs identified by the group at its earlier meetings.
The year's programme began with the mentorees completing NICE analysis surveys. NICE stands for Needs, Interests, Concerns and Expectations. A group brainstorming session that identified the learning needs for the year followed this. The mentorees also completed a pre-programme evaluation questionnaire, which will be used by the group facilitators to evaluate the programme.
Two of the six learning needs have been delivered to date. Judy Smith presented a session on motivation. Three theories on motivation were introduced and self-motivation characteristics were discussed.
Jenne Oliver hosted an evening where a register of libraries and their contacts was presented. The type of library and the automated system used is identified on the register. The purpose of the register is to enhance access for mentorees to automated library systems experience so that they can become familiar with them and be able to satisfy system knowledge criteria on job applications.
Scheduled for to the rest of the year are sessions that will deal with interview and selection criteria, negotiation Internet, and interpersonal skills. Mentorees in the group will host these sessions.
The importance of social interaction is recognised by the group and time is allocated to this either before or after the more formal part of the evenings.
Initial contact with this year's library technician graduates, who will be invited to form the Graduate Mentoring Programme in 2003, is scheduled for October.
Judy Smith replaced Bonnie Bruce as the library technician representative on the WA Mentoring committee 7 May.
Several WALTGMP members have attended workshops run by the WA Mentoring Group. Judy Allan and Judy Smith attended the Meyers Briggs Personality Type Indicator workshop in April that was presented by Terena Solomons. This event was both enlightening and entertaining and provided a good understanding of personality types, which can be useful for self-understanding, team building, and problem solving.
A workshop on mentoring skills delivered in June by Carmel O'Sullivan of the WA Mentoring Group, offered insight from both a mentor and a mentoree and gave some good communication tips for the mentoring process. Judy Allan, Judy Smith and Susan Fordham attended this session.
