ALIA WA Library Technicians

Minutes of the meeting: 20 June 2001

LISWA, Room 2.9

Opened at: 5:35pm

The president's report by Sandra Wilson was presented to the group. It included information presented at the general meeting of November 2000 and was updated to today (see item 5)

  1. Present: Sandra Wilson, Judy Smith, Brenda Ellen, Bonnie Bruce, Karen Shackleton, Sharon Coppin, Jean Broomhall, Helena Hercik, Brenda Westcott, Dianne Elphick, Wendy Monaghan, Judy Clayden, Beverly Dallas, (5:45pm) Judy Allan.
    Guests: Cathryn Cream, Laura Hearn (TAFE students)

  2. Apologies: Robyn Graham, Sue Hope, Evette House, Carole Metcalf, Jill Stabler, Lothar Retzlaff, Linley Thornber.
    The positions of the WALTS committee were declared vacant at 5:45pm and the meeting was chaired by Beverly Dallas.

  3. Minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting:
    3.1 Minutes from the AGM of 16 November 1999 were presented to the meeting.

  4. Business arising from minutes:
    4.1 None (Secretary's note: no AGM was held for 2000 due to the restructuring of ALIA that resulted in Sections' terms of office being altered from calendar year to fiscal year. The WALTS committee carried over their offices from November 2000 to the new AGM date of June 2001)

  5. President's report:
    5.1 The first half of this year has been a very busy and prosperous time for WALT's. The Committee has been busy submitting a proposal for funding to form a new group as part of the new structure for ALIA; awarding the first Student Conference Grant winner, and holding some very successful events.
    5.2 Jan to June 2001 included:
    • Stepping out - Technicians in the new information environment to which approximately 50 people attended
    • Skills Audit workshop (about 25 attendees)
    • Lunch at the Sicilian Café in Fremantle (about 11 people attended).
    • Library Week breakfast at Frazers' Restaurant in Kings Park (about 12 attendees).
    • Library week dinner at Rosie O'Grady's Pub with guest speaker Marilyn Boydell. Marilyn talked about her role as a Station Manager in the Antarctic (about 20 attendees).
    • The first WALT's Student Conference Award was presented to Mason Clarke.
    5.3 Issues
    • New group structure - WALT's accepted as one of the 63 new groups
    • ALIA fees - a lot of discussion on Libtec e-mail list and a letter of complaint was sent to Jennefer Nicholson from the National Library Technicians president and a letter was also sent from WALT's
    • LISWA Strategic Plan 2002-2007 document - comments sent from WALT's
    5.4 Functions
    • Members of the WALT's committee have been busy attending other ALIA functions including the launch of Library Week which was held at the Constitutional Centre.
    • Dinner at Brass Monkey for the end of Branch Council as it exists now. The new name is WA Forum and a re-birthing dinner will be held on 27 July at the Karrakatta club.
    • Bonnie attended the Professional Reading group meeting 12 June.
    5.5 Section representatives

  6. Treasurer's report: The Annual Report was read.
    • 1 July - 20 June 2001
    • Inflow $13 340.33
    • Outflow $12 014.92
    • Balance $ 1325.41 credit

  7. Sectional reports: None

  8. General business
    8.1 The new structure of the Sections requires a minimum committee of president (convenor) and treasurer, with additional members called as required for special events. The position of secretary will continue in its original format.

    8.2 The positions of secretary and treasurer were declared vacant. One nomination was received for the position of treasurer.

    8.3 The committee for 2001-2002 will be:
    • Convenor - Bonnie Bruce (vice-president 1999/2001)
    • Secretary - Brenda Ellen (elected unopposed)
    • Treasurer - Karen Shackleton (elected unopposed)

    8.4 Wendy Monaghan volunteered to assist with events and Jean Broomhall volunteered to assist with publicity for events

    8.5 A vote of thanks for the outgoing members Sandra Wilson and Judy Smith was proposed by the secretary and seconded by applause from the meeting.

    8.6 Correspondence from Linley Thornber was received prior to the meeting and is included here as a comment regarding the past committee, 'I would like to congratulate the outgoing committee for the marvellous job they've done over the past 12 months. While the changes to ALIA are exciting and challenging, I can appreciate the extra workload this has created for all the committee. Please give ourselves all a pat on the back - congratulations and best wishes for the incoming committee.' (Note: this was not presented at the meeting)

    8.7 Bonnie presented an outline of events for the year 2001-2002;
    • 9 July 2001 General meeting
    • 18 July 2001 Pre-conference get together, Captain Stirling Hotel
    • 12 September 2001 Post-conference debriefing, venue tba
    • 15 October 2001 Metadata, what is it? Presented by Gillian Westera and Trevis Lawton, venue tba.
    • 13 November 2001 End-of-year event. Proposal is a light-hearted panel discussion with the topic 'Hand me my whip - can you discipline your library user and still remain friends?' Panel participants - volunteers welcome, venue tba.
    • January/February 2002 Information session for new graduates 'What is WALTS and what can it do for you?' (venue, time suggestions?)
    • March/April 2002 CPD workshop/seminar (suggestions?)
    • May 2002 Library Technicians Day celebration and Library and Information Week Dinner with speaker (venue, speaker suggestions welcome)
    • June 2002 Mini-Conference in the South West region following the formula of the Mildura mini conference organised by the SA and Victorian Library Technician groups

    8.5 Next meeting: General meeting: 9 July, Edith Cowan University, Churchlands Campus, 5:45pm for 6:00pm start
