Victorian ALIA Library Technicians

neXt 2005

ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference

Sydney September 6-9 2005

Hundreds of delegates embarked on Sydney for a fun-filled week of library tours, wonderful presentations and a bit of dancing at 'neXt 2005: ALIA National Library and Information Technician's Conference' in Sydney.

Highlights for me included Alex Byrne's keynote address on 'IFLA and its three pillars: making a difference globally', Sharon Uthmann's 'Multi-skill me: secondment opportunities and issues at QUT library' and Carolyn Cherrett's keynote address 'My job, my career!', which explored alternatives outside the library environment. The 'Communities of interest' afternoon also allowed me to catch up with and meet fellow medical library technicians.

For me the week was topped off with a fantastic conference dinner with the sensational band 'The enourmous horns' in which I danced early into the morning. Events like these are a fantastic chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones, learn about other library environments and to explore the opportunities that are open for library technicians around the world.
