Alison is yet to investigate the possibility of the November committee meeting being held at the EBSCO offices.
- Job seekers forum
Clare reported that there has been great interest and that she has sent out 13 forms. Kerrie will print some more registration forms and send them to Clare.
- Technotes October issue
Kerrie reported that the October issue will be ready to distribute at the Job seekers forum. Articles will include:
- Friends of the libraries Australia
- Committee profile
- QuestionPoint/Alison Foster [our member in Washington, DC]
- Techs on tour/Bradley O'Brien
- EmployLT/Matthew Griffiths
- End-of-year dinner
After some discussion we decided to hold the dinner on 4 December at Bell's Hotel in South Melbourne. Kerrie will make the booking.
- Activities for 2003
Kerrie reported that she expects that our programme and budget for 2003 will be due to be submitted by early December.
Kerrie distributed a draft copy of the 2003 timetable. It was noted that we already have a busy schedule. We discussed the draft timetable.
- Ballarat visit, March
Kerrie is yet to follow-up the details.
- Tour of the new Mill Park Library [Yarra Plenty Libraries]
Kerrie has investigated the possibility of a visit. She has the contact details for the relevant staff members. We decided to arrange a tour for the March committee meeting if possible.
- Canberra visit with NSW library technicians, April
There is no further news. It was mentioned that the war memorial is planning some special events for next year's ANZAC Day. Kerrie will check their website.
- Proposed library display workshop
Those at the meeting discussed the draft proposal that had been distributed to members prior to the meeting.
Kerrie has contacted Ian McGregor, training officer at the Yarra Plenty Libraries. He reported that the statewide training program's library display workshop is excellent and very popular. We therefore cannot rely on delegates attending from the local government library sector.
Many expressed concern regarding the cost of the workshop. It was felt that it would be out of reach for those in the school library sector. Even with sponsorship, the cost for members would be approximately $80 per delegate. Aranka queried the cost of the trainer. Kerrie has done some checking, and $1500 is around the average cost for a professional trainer for the day.
The meeting decided not to place the workshop on the schedule for 2003 at this stage. We will keep it in mind for future activities.
- National Library Technicians Day, Library and Information Week, May.
The date is yet to be determined.
- QuestionPoint
Our member in Washington DC, Alison Foster, is planning a visit in mid-2003 and has agreed to make a presentation. The date is to be determined.
- Techs on tour, July
If we decide to continue with our usual pattern of the middle Saturday in the July term break, the date would be 5 July.
- Pre-conference get together, August
We usually organise an afternoon tea in Lygon Street prior to a Conference. This gives delegates the opportunity to meet prior to the Conference.
- Post-conference meeting, October
The meeting provides a chance for those who couldn't attend the Conference to catch up on the news and information presented.
- Distribution of Committee minutes/Technotes
Kerrie reported that the July minutes are now on our website, and she will send up the now confirmed August minutes soon.
ALIA National Office has requested a paper copy of Technotes to enable them to decide the best way to provide access on our webpage. Kerrie will send a copy. The meeting discussed which issues should be placed on the website and decided to include the October 2001 and January 2002 issues.
- 2005 Conference bid
The Convenor of the 2005 Melbourne bid committee, Clare Bristow, reported that the committee has decided not to pursue the bid.
Matthew Griffiths reported that the NSW committee will be discussing the 2005 conference bid soon.
- Convenor's report
Kerrie apologised for not having provided a list of correspondence.
- LISEKA project
She reported that there will not be any changes to membership categories. A number of options were discussed under the LISEKA project but because of the successful NSW pay equity case, it was decided not to make any changes. The continuing professional development option will be further developed.
- Visit from Bea Brickhill
Bea is the new membership and marketing manager and visited Melbourne recently. Kerrie organised a lunchtime meeting with representatives from a number of ALIA groups, plus Tricia Murray. Bea reported that ALIA National Office is developing a 'members-only' section on the website. She is keen to hear our ideas for marketing and membership. Suggestions to Kerrie.
- ALIA Vic
Kerrie reported that she had contacted the secretary of ALIA Vic, Ian McGregor. She has suggested that representatives of all the Victorian groups meet to discuss their programmes for 2003 with a view to the possible sharing of resources. It would also provide help to those people who are new to ALIA's programme budgeting. More details to follow.
- National ALIA Library Technicians Committee news
Kerrie reported that she had contacted the convenor of the national committee, Lothar Retzlaff to advise him that Clare will be taking over as Victorian representative. Unfortunately there has been confusion, and Clare's e-mail address has been omitted from the discussions.
Kerrie was able to report that the national committee has been discussing the recent changes to the format of the National Policy Congress. Regional meetings will be held to discuss the issues, and a representative elected to attend a meeting in Canberra in November. Background papers will be available soon, and distributed to the Vic. committee for comment.
- Treasurer's report
As Alison is away on holiday, there was no report.
- Other business
- Borders after dark
Brad noted that Acquisitions SA had organised a meeting at Borders Bookshop in Adelaide. The article in inCite on page 32 reported that the event was very popular. The meeting agreed that it sounded an interesting idea. Brad undertook to contact Robert Elson, president of the Acquisitions Group, to get some more details.
- Biennial conference report
Aranka asked if we had heard any details of the Biennial conference held in Sydney. She was curious to hear a report of the numbers who had attended and any feedback from delegates. No one yet had seen or heard of the final report.
- Employ LT presentation
Matthew Griffiths presented a very interesting report on the Employ LT service. His presentation included a number of overhead transparencies providing some of history, statistics and current procedures. Matthew obviously invests much of his spare time in the service which is appreciated.
Kerrie thanked Matthew for visiting Melbourne to attend the meeting, and his work in developing the presentation.
Next meeting: 1 October, 6:00pm. Deakin University, Burwood Campus Library
