Kerrie welcomed those who attended, and thanked Geoff Rockow, CEO of the Library. Geoff showed us around the Library, and answered our many questions. It was interesting to know that he started life in libraries as a student Library Technician training at Whitehorse College.
Apologies: Nanette Gardner, Aranka Folino, Linda Jowsey and Sandra Axford.

- Techs on tour
Once again this was a successful event, with thanks to Brad for the wonderful effort he put in to ensure its continuing success. All agreed that the history of Baillieu Library presentation was a highlight of the event, especially the video. The talk by Mike Shuttleworth, Australian Centre for Youth Literature was also very well received.
Kerrie has collated the evaluation forms, and distributed a summary to those at the meeting. Many delegates commented that they wished they had more time to be shown around the Baillieu Library. Due to the popularity of the tour of the library, perhaps we could incorporate it into next years Techs on Tour, as one of the libraries to be visited in the afternoon.
- Future committee meetings
The September meeting is to be held at the State Library of Victoria. Matthew Griffiths, national employment co-ordinator from Sydney has asked to attend our next meeting. It was suggested that we organise a dinner after the meeting or hold the meeting at a restaurant/hotel. Kerrie will investigate. Matthew asked if anyone could offer him a room for the night. Unfortunately, no one was able to help.
October's meeting will be held at Deakin University in Burwood, Clare and Libby have offered to host this meeting.
November's meeting. Alison suggested that it might be possible to hold the meeting at the Ebsco offices. She will investigate. Parking could be a problem.
- Job seekers forum
The presentation by Clare and Libby has been scheduled for October 19th. Margie Anderson from One Umbrella will also be taking part in this discussion. A draft copy of the leaflet was shown to those attending the meeting, and will be sent out shortly. Alison agreed to accept the application forms, and send out the receipts.
- Activities for 2003
- Ballarat visit, February or March
Kerrie explained the history behind this to those new to the meeting, and mentioned that we were trying to schedule it for early in the year in order to offer it to new students and qualified library technicians in the area. The idea for 2003 was to conduct a mini techs on tour in Ballarat. Kerrie will contact the course co-ordinator at the University of Ballarat and Kim Fraumano.
- Canberra visit with NSW technicians, April
The plan is for delegates to meet in Canberra. However, if the numbers require it, we could hire a 12-seater bus for those interested in travelling together. Delegates will make their own reservations for hotels/apartments. It was suggested that we could include some suggested places for accommodation on the application form, as they do for the conferences, and delegates choose their own accommodation.
- Proposed Library display presentation
Kerrie mentioned that the ALIA Schools Group has been approached, and they are interested in hearing more about the idea (there is the possibility of the groups working jointly on the event). As reported at the last meeting Linda Jowsey has contacted an RMIT lecturer, who would charge $1500. This does not include venue hire or catering. Kerrie and Linda will work on developing a proposal.
- Other ideas
Kerrie canvassed those present for any other ideas, however, it does look as if once again we have a pretty full schedule for 2003. She asked us all to think about suggestions for discussion at future meetings. Our schedule and budget for 2003 is due at ALIA National Office in early December.
- QuestionPoint presentation
Alison Foster, our member from Washington DC will be visiting Melbourne next year, and she has agreed to make a presentation on the online reference service QuestionPoint. Alison's trip is planned for mid year.
- Conference events
Next year is of course a Conference year. On this matter Kerrie mentioned that we could once again be hold an afternoon tea prior to the Conference, as this gives those going on their own a chance to meet others who would be at the Conference. We usually also hold a Post Conference event.
- Distribution of Committee meeting minutes
Two options of distributing our confirmed minutes were discussed. We can either put them on our ALIA webpage, or send them via e-mail to members. Using the webpage will give other groups a chance to see what we were doing. It also may encourage other members to join the committee. The meeting agreed to arrange for the minutes to be posted on our webpage. Kerrie will contact ALIA National Office.
There was also discussion about putting Technotes on our webpage, but Kerrie reminded those present that we had agreed to make issues available only to members of our group. However, it was suggested that we place back issues on the web to encourage additional membership. Kerrie will investigate.
- 2005 Conference bid
Kerrie mentioned to our guests that we had formed a committee to bid for the 2005 conference to be held in Melbourne. Some of this committee were present at the meeting. After hearing that ALIA wanted an one umbrella conference the bid was put on hold. Many agreed that they had lost the momentum for continuing with the bid, as it would involve a lot of work, and we would need more members able to offer help. The idea of a joint conference was mentioned, however, most agreed that this may not work. The current suggestion was Albury, but regardless of the LibTec discussion there is some doubt about holding a conference in a regional centre. Clare Bristow Convenor of this 2005 Melbourne bid committee agreed to e-mail all members on the committee to ask whether or not they wanted to go reconvene and bid for the 2005 conference.
- Convenor's report
- Correspondence
Kerrie presented a list of correspondence she has received, many of these items were regarding Techs on Tour. She has sent out formal letters of thanks to Sue Clarke (Baillieu Library), Majella Pugh (Royal Melbourne Hospital Library) and Nicki McLaurin Smith (Legal Resource Centre Univ. of Melb)
- Bea Brickhill, membership and marketing manager, ALIA National Office visit
Bea has asked if we would like to meet and discuss ALIA issues over lunch on 16 August. Please let Kerrie know if are able to come along. Kerrie will investigate a city venue for lunch.
- Role of the convenor and deputy convenor
Kerrie suggested that Clare take on the role of publicity officer, and also represent our group on the national ALIA library technicians committee. This might entail representing our group at the National Policy Congress. The meeting agreed, and Kerrie was able to provide Clare will some notes on the duties of the publicity officer.
- Treasurer's report
Alison reported that according to ALIA we are $637.00 in the red, however we did make a profit of $233.36 from Techs on Tour.
- Other business
- Sponshorship
Trevor McCann from Raeco asked us to consider approaching them for sponsorship for events. An appropriate event might be the library presentation skills workshop. However, he did remind us that sometimes they would not be able to help. The committee was extremely grateful for this suggestion, as it showed the continuing support Raeco has always had for Australian library technicians.
The meeting closed at 7:55pm.
Next meeting: Tuesday 5 September, State Library of Victoria. Meet in the foyer at 6:00pm.
