ALIA South Australian Library Technicians

Minutes of the meeting: 10 December 2001

Fleet Street Restaurant, Pulteney Street, Adelaide

  1. Meeting opened: 6:45pm

  2. Present: Marion, Amanda, Jackie, Jennifer, Kathy

  3. Apologies: Karen, Eva, Julie, Sharron

  4. Minutes of the previous meeting on 15 October 2001: Accepted. Moved - Jackie, seconded - Kathy.

  5. Business arising from the minutes:
    5.1. Group proposal - Sharron wants to re-submit a Budget Proposal that is planned to break even. Sharron to action.

    5.2. Finalisation of previous Group - Marion has in process.

    5.3. inCite monthly themes and deadlines - Jennifer to check website. Failing this to e-mail editor of inCite.

  6. Correspondence in:

    6.1. Minutes of Special Libraries Group meeting held in November.

    6.2. E-mails re: ALIA and conferences issue.

    6.3. Library Technician's National section report from Stephen Coppins

    6.4. Minutes of Health Group meeting held in November.

  7. Correspondence out:
    7.1. None

  8. General business:
    8.1. Planning for 2001-2002

    8.1.1. Mentoring programme - Sharron has in process. To commence in January 2002.

    8.1.2. Tour of IMVS Library - Kathy to investigate timing and feasibility. Suggested to try for February/March/April

    8.1.3. Regional Groups - Karen is working towards contacting those who responded to questionnaire. Will send them a covering letter, the results of the questionnaire and information re ALIA, etc.

    8.1.4. Professional development activity - Suggested date 4 March. (Meeting date 18 March). Marion to investigate availability of location eg. Burnside Library. Jennifer to work on flyer with assistance from Jackie's husband. Suggestions for topics:
    8.1.4.1. "Brochures without tears"
    8.1.4.2. "Create your own web-page offline"

    8.1.5. Techs on Tour - 21 May 2002. Roma Mitchell Arts Centre Library. Need to wait for new graduate to be appointed to negotiate tour. Kathy to investigate with Jenny Jeremy re: City West Library tour. National Archives Library suggested as back-up if required.

    8.1.6. Mount Brecken weekend workshop - Original date (26-27 October) is not available. Jennifer to make a tentative booking for 19-20 October.

    8.2. Riverland Regional Group - Necessary to clarify how many of Group and who are ALIA members to ascertain if Group is viable under the umbrella of ALIA. Only ALIA members can make decisions concerning the Group. They also need to keep in close contact with SALT and advise the financial management of the Group. If the Group is no longer viable as an ALIA sub-group, they will not be covered by ALIA's insurance.

    8.3. NSW, ACT and VIC weekend workshop - to be held in Albury on 21-22 April. Jennifer to check and advise availability of buses.

    8.4. Brisbane 2003 conference - Marketing needs to start soon eg. start saving now. Save a little often and be ready when the time comes.

    8.5. January meeting - No meeting was planned, but those of Committee present decided meeting was necessary to plan February/March activities. 'How many Library Technicians does it take to fill a swimming pool?' Come to Jennifer's house on Sunday 20 January at 12:00pm and find out. To be mainly social event with brief discussion as above. Bring your own everything including chairs, hats and sunscreen. Jennifer to publicise on LibTec through Sharron

  9. Any other business:
    9.1. General discussion re: National Policy Congress and Conference issue.
