ALIA Queensland Library Technicians

2002-2003 annual report

ALIA Queensland Library Technicians Group has had a successful year 2002-2003. At the Annual General Meeting last year I was given the honour of being Convenor of the group. The Committee consisted of Susan Sawyer, vice-convenor, Lyn Bogaarts, secretary, Helen Trochoulias, treasurer, Anne Collins, IT Webmaster, Margaret Mowberry, student representative and general committee members Maxine Cole and Jane O'Brien. During the year Maxine and Jane, could no longer continue but we gained two replacements, Anna Johnson and Robyn Carlyle. I would like to thank all these people for their loyalty to me and their generous assistance and I hope they all feel that it was a rewarding experience. I would also like to thank Marian Moyle, the past convenor, for her helpful advice when needed.

At the first committee meeting after the June 2002 Annual General Meeting it was decided that Wednesday meetings suited the committee better than Tuesday so the change was made for both the committee meetings and the mid-week activities offered. This has resulted in some members not being able to attend but hopefully has allowed other to do so.

On 11 September 2002, Noeline Fleming from the UQL Cyberschool http://www.cybrary.uq.edu.au/schools was our guest speaker at the State Library of Queensland's Theatrette. The services offered by this award winning program and its qualified and experienced teacher-librarians are:

  • Quality information resources at a discounted purchase price for school access
  • A website with links to valuable information and resources
  • Advice, support and solutions to technical problems
  • Training and updates for teachers, teacher-librarians and students
  • Tours and guidance in the use of relevant information resources

The Queensland National Policy Conference was held on Wednesday 2 October. I attended as the representative of the Queensland Library Technicians Group.

On Tuesday 5 November, Susan Sawyer (Vice-Convenor), Margaret Mowberry (Student Representative) and myself addressed a class of student library technicians at the Morningside Campus of Southbank Institute of TAFE. The students were introduced to ALIA and the information available on the website. They were also informed of the opportunities offered locally for them to attend meetings and seminars organised by the Queensland Library Technicians Group.

A Christmas breakfast was held on Sunday 24 November at 9:00am at the Stones Corner Hotel which allowed 19 members to enjoy each others company and catch up on what has been happening in the library world during 2002.

On 12 February at our usual venue at the State Library of Queensland an informative evening with guest speakers Kim Sutcliffe from Southbank Institute of TAFE and Elaine Baker of Moreton Institute of TAFE was held. Kim and Elaine briefly outlined their careers and their involvement with selection criteria and interviews through their own applications and as members of interview panels. Kim gave valuable advice about answering selection criteria and Elaine urged us to plan and prepare well for an interview.

A visit on Saturday 15 March to the Queensland State Archives proved very popular with 38 members attending. We were given an eloquent and knowledgeable talk and guided tour by Nola Fulwood the Public Access Manager. This was followed by a lunch at a very busy yum cha restaurant which was attended by 20 members.

Again this year the Annual Dinner has been a highlight I am told. I was on holidays at the time and missed the event. Many thanks to those who carried on so well without me. The Dinner was held on Library Technicians Day, Tuesday 13 May, during Library Week at Skyline Restaurant, Southbank Institute of TAFE. The hospitality students served a lovely Asian meal and a trio of Conservatorium of Music students entertained beautifully. The guest speaker of the evening, Janet Poole, Community Services Librarian, Logan City Council engaged the gathering with her experiences of organising the position and working in a library in Edinburgh. Library Locums representative, Deirdre Gibb, presented a lucky door prize. The Queensland Library Technician of the Year (Recent Graduate) award was presented to Meredith Lewis of QEII Hospital HSD by Colin Matthews of Queensland Library Supplies, the sponsor. The selection panel had a difficult job deciding on the recipient, as there were five very fine nominations received but Meredith proved a worthy winner responding to her presentation in an excellent manner.

During the year I have tried to attend as many Quorum meetings as possible to ensure that library technician's views are represented outside our group. I know other library technician members are members of other ALIA groups helping to enhance the reputation of library technicians within the profession.

So, twelve months later on Wednesday 11 June 2003 in a different venue we are holding another Annual General Meeting. I would like to wish the new committee elected tonight all the best for the future.

Jennifer Parker
Convenor
