ALIA Queensland Library Technicians

July-December 2001 report

Purposes and goals

The following purposes /goals were set by the group when formed in 2001.

  • To offer support, networking, and learning opportunities for library technicians and students
  • Promote ALIA and membership
  • Act as mentors for newly-qualified library technicians
  • Provide forum for information and discussion

Progression towards these goals has been achieved through the activities of the group in the past six months in the following manner:

Support, networking and learning opportunities have been provided through the regular general meetings of the group in the form of:

  • informal drinks and nibbles before meetings
  • a schedule of speakers invited to contribute to the meeting in an interactive setting
  • a program of topics relevant to members work and study areas.

ALIA membership has been supported and encouraged formally through:

  • meeting with Library Technician students at the Morningside Campus of Southbank Institute of TAFE. In November 2001, the Convenor was invited to address a class of 20 graduating students to talk about ALIA and the benefits of membership, in conjunction with other speakers who were promoting job-seeking skills and resume writing advice.
  • feedback to the group at the Conference Capers meeting in September 2001
  • informal encouragement between members and others at the regular meetings.

Mentoring for newly qualified technicians has not been pursued in a formal manner as the ALIA QUORUM Group ably covers thin their mentoring program is. Members of the ALIA Queensland Library Technicians Group have promoted this program at the talks to Library Technician students. However, informal mentoring is happening between some Library Technicians within the group.

A forum for information and discussion is provided in the bimonthly general meetings. Minutes of meetings are distributed to all members on our electronic mailing list, and are put on the ALIA website. Meetings follow accepted meeting procedures and the floor is open to business arising from minutes, and other business, at appropriate times. Members also make active use of the aliaLIBTEC discussion list.

Key group activities

Activities of the group include:

  • Executive meetings
  • General meetings which are devoted to special topics
  • Networking opportunities
  • Opportunities to address Library Technician students
  • Annual Dinner
  • Presentation of the Qld Library Technician of the Year Award (Recent Graduate)

Executive meetings are held bimonthly with the general meetings being held in the alternate months.
The executive meetings are held at the Jazzy Cat Café where the committee is able to enjoy a cosy meeting room and a quiet working dinner. The executive consists of eight members, and attendance is excellent. Executive meetings were held in August and October.

The General meetings are generally held at the Qld State Library Theatrette and are attended by about twenty people each time. General meetings were held in July, September and November. The meetings are preceded by a drinks and nibbles half-hour so that everyone can mingle and meet one another.

The July meeting was held in the Toowong Public Library and was devoted to a talk and hands-on activity with e-books. Katherine Harding, a librarian at Toowong Library and also the ALIA Local Presence Officer co-ordinated this activity. This meeting attracted a staff member from the Library Technicians course and several of the students, in conjunction with regular members.

The September meeting was based on feedback from the 11th Library Technicians Conference in Hobart. The Convenor, a conference speaker and the 2003 Conference Convenor led discussion. Feedback was given from the National Library Technicians meeting and AGM. A speaker from the conference gave her thoughts and advice on preparing and delivering a paper at a conference. Feedback from the 2003 Conference Committee centred on the promotional activities and the booth display that had had taken place both before and during the Hobart conference. The conference papers website address was promoted and various conference speakers were praised for their relevant topics and memorable delivery.

The November meeting was based on Marketing your library and featured a Kym Corfield, who had delivered a marketing paper at the Hobart conference. She led an interactive discussion on the marketing topic in general, and the special marketing activities in which she has been involved at her library.

The main networking activity is the Christmas Tecky Brecky which is to be held on 25 November. Networking activities are the best supported activities of the group and generally attract about 40 people. Bookings so far reflect this trend.

Library Technician students were addressed at an evening meeting for graduating students in November. The convenor delivered a talk on the benefits of belonging to ALIA. Notices of the general meetings and the relevant topics are regularly forwarded to the course co-ordinator for distribution to the students.

The annual dinner and presentation of the Qld Library Technician of the Year Award (Recent Graduate) will take place in May 2002. In the past, we have had 35-40 paying guests and three or four invited guests, with some people travelling from the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast to attend.

Expenditure and income

Variation from the predicted budget for July-December 2001 varied in the following manner:

Hire of a technician has not been needed to date, but may be in the future.
Catering costs have run at an average of $30.00 per general meeting.
A donated raffle prize raised over $400.00 for the group.

The budget for 2002 is based on costs for similar activities in previous years.

Issues in 2002

Ways of working

The executive committee have been considering two changes for 2002.

  • We are planning to publish a regular newsletter three times per year. We believe this will facilitate communication to members and give them an added benefit for their membership. The newsletter will be composed by volunteers and distributed as much as possible by e-mail. Printed copies will be posted to members without e-mail access, institute members, and to other Queensland ALIA group convenors. Printing and distribution costs will need to be met for a newsletter.
  • The committee is examining the feasibility of charging extra fees for non-members' attendance at group general meeting activities in 2002. Until this time, we have welcomed all attendees on an equal footing, but are considering ways to enhance ALIA membership at a local level.

Purposes and goals

After reconsidering the original purposes and goals, and examining whether we had been successful in meeting them, the committee has decided to retain the same purposes and goals in 2002.

The Qld Library technicians Group will hold the AGM in June 2002, and it is expected that there will be some change to the executive committee.

Issues of concern to the Queensland Library Technician Group are the changes to the conference structure, continuing CPD activities and declining membership.
