The AGM closed at 6:20pm
Following the closure of the meeting, Margaret Mowberry, the Drug-Arm Resource Centre's library technician, welcomed all present and thanked them for their donations of food, clothing and money. She then gave a short, but very informative, talk on the history of Drug-Arm and the Resource Centre's activities:
- Drug-Arm actually began in 1849 as part of the temperance movement, eventually becoming the Women's Christian Temperance Union in 1885 and had as it's headquarters the Canberra Hotel in Ann Street, Brisbane.
Drug-Arm is a specialist alcohol and other drug agency which has a Christian ethics-based program and a philosophy of minimisation. It provides a range of prevention, rehabilitation and management interventions that support individuals, families and communities to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and other drug use e.g Street Outreach Service (SOS), Mobile Outreach Support and Health Program by Integrated Teams (MOSHPIT), Home Assessment and Response Teams (HART) and the Drug-Arm BAILEY Program (Building Awareness, Innovation and Leadership through the Empowerment of Youth and Families).
- The Resource Centre is the only specialist substance abuse public lending library in Queensland. It is completely self-funded - Margaret's position is solely maintained through funding from the Rotary Club.
- For cataloguing it's collection the Resource Centre utilises the DDC system and LCSH. It's resources include books, videos, posters, brochures and fact sheets (available at a cost of 20 cents each) education kits, and journals. In order to generate income the Centre has also created, as a fundraiser, it's own publication 'Matters of Substance'.
Following her talk, Margaret invited all present to view the collection then, on behalf of the Group, Jennifer presented Margaret with a gift in acknowledgment of her contribution to the meeting.
