- General/other business
The guest speaker for the AGM was Jenny Hale from Resource Options. Jenny initially graduated in the first library technician's course in Victoria, then qualified as a librarian, followed by a Masters degree. Jenny summarised her colourful 30 or more years in the library industry: from working in Canada; setting up her own business when library positions weren't available; working 12- to 13-hour days at the Goodwill Games; to her current work as owner/manager at Resource Options.
Resource Options started as a consultancy to help smaller libraries develop and progress. Then she was asked to provide staff: so the employment agency section was set up for library and records staff. Resource Options does not advertise widely: they mainly rely on word of mouth and the website.
There are a number of training courses on offer, covering cataloguing (taught for the past six years) which will ultimately be put on the web; interview techniques: resumes and selection criteria; and Trimagic: DBTextworks. They are developing a new graduate program to support new librarians and technicians for the first six months of their career. To conclude, Jenny imparted a few pearls of wisdom such as: market yourself first, then the library will be marketed: look outside the square: create your own luck: see the challenge and then find the solution: take note of what people are looking for, don't presume: and Network, Network, Network!
Brochures and business cards were also on display. Jane presented Jenny with a bottle of wine as a thank you gift.
- Report from conference committee.
Yvonne Brock provided updates on the conference details.
- A January to June report has been send to the Board of Directors at ALIA.
- A trading sponsors' database has been set up, and they now have a three-page prospectus.
- Seeding funds have been received from ALIA: $15 000 was requested and received in full.
- The education program draft has just been released and will be put on the web page in two to three weeks.
- The call for papers will be very selective (starts early September). Presenters will not only be library staff but also public speakers, promoters etc. who can promote skills that can be used in a library. Three major keynote speakers have been contacted: one has accepted so far.
- Fees: Early bird fees will be $595.00: the cost will increase significantly later. Fundraising activities will subsidize the social programs and help keep the costs down.
Elaine West mentioned the activities planned so far; the Shop...Til You Drop on 21 July: flyers have been distributed: and a dinner at the Japanese Gardens, Mt Coot-Tha, will be held early November.
Marian Moyle was presented with flowers to thank her for her wonderful work as convenor for the past 18 months which covered the new structure of groups in ALIA.
The meeting closed at 7:40pm.
