ALIA Queensland Library Technicians

Meeting minutes

6:00pm 11 September 2002, Metway Theatre, State Library of QLD, 5:00pm-5:30pm

Guest Speaker: Noeleen Fleming from UQL Cyberschool

  1. The meeting commenced with our guest speaker, Noeleen Fleming from UQL Cyberschool (pamphlet and information sheet included with correspondence) outlining the Cyberschool program. Noeleen Fleming and Liz Blumson, both teacher-librarians with many years of experience have set up the program to provide online information resources to high schools according to their individual needs and budgets. This is made available through their website which also provides links to:
    • Evaluated internet sites in specific subject areas
    • A virtual reference collection
    • Authoritative e-resources for each of the key learning areas of the curriculum
    • The University cybrary's online catalogue.

    The talk was very interesting and informative, particularly to those technicians working in high school libraries, and those with high school age children. Jennifer thanked Noeleen and presented her with a small gift.

  4. Minutes of previous general meeting
    Jennifer read the minutes of the previous general meeting (12 February 2002) which were accepted by Lyn and seconded by Jane

  6. Correspondence - in
    The only correspondence was e-mails from the aliaLIBTEC e-list:
    • 10 September 2002: Robyn Mackenzie: re the 2003 conference call for papers and the themes for the 3 days.

    There was no business arising.

  9. Treasurer's report
    Helen Trochoulias has taken on the position of treasurer. She reported that the balance held by ALIA as at 31 August 2002 is $403.19. There was a small loss on the mystery tour, however we had a small profit on the annual dinner. We are keeping within our budget.

  10. General Business

    Christmas breakfast
    The booking for Sunday, 24 November at the Stones Corner Hotel has been confirmed. Cost will be: $10.50 for full breakfast; and $6.50 for the continental breakfast, both served with with juice and coffee. A flyer will be sent out with RSVP dates and request for breakfast preferences.

    ALIA Quorum meeting
    Jennifer Parker attended the ALIA Quorum meeting last week at BCC Central Library and is now on the committee. Meetings will be held every two months. Their next activity is the New Librarians two-day seminar in early November.

    Jen also attended the lunchtime seminar on 2 September 2002 at Blake, Dawson, Waldron: guest speaker was Phil Teece. The main topic was the NSW wage case.

    National Policy Congress
    The next NPC meeting will be held on Wednesday 2 October 2002 in the state library boardroom. Jen offered to represent the library technicians group and provide feedback.

    2003 Conference
    Marian Moyle gave the conference report.

    Activities: there will be an evening event at the japanese gardens at Mt Coot-tha on Friday 8 November, time TBA. A flyer will be sent out via the e-list.

    The call for papers is being put out via the e-list.

    There will also be a need for helpers during the conference week, in a variety of positions.

    Next meeting
    The next general meeting will be held on Wednesday 12 February 2003.

As there was no further business the meeting closed at 7:30pm.
