ALIA NSW Library TechniciansJanuary-June 2003Six-monthly report to the ALIA Board of Directors The year commenced with a dinner held on 22 January to coincide with the Online Conference. The dinner was held at the Blackbird Café with 12 people in attendance. On the 12th February we had a meeting at the Sydney office of One Umbrella. One Umbrella staff member Anu Suttie gave a presentation relating to organising your career. In April a small group of us got together at the Greenwood Hotel in North Sydney for drinks and dinner. This was in lieu of a meeting for the month. There were two standout highlights for the year so far. The first was Techs on Tour to Canberra, once again combined with Victorian library technicians. The library tours consisted of NLA, Noel Butlin Archives and High Court Library. There was also a visit to ALIA House and talks by Phil Teece and Collette Ormond. This was a very successful activity with everyone enjoying the tours and the fraternity. Trevor McCann from RAECO also came along and mixed a bit of business with a bit of pleasure and as per usual was the life of the party. The other highlight was the winning of the bid to hold the conference in Sydney 2005. We held a Career Planning Workshop at Sydney University on Saturday 10th May. The workshop was planned by Meredith and run by Della Aysley from Sydney Uni. Thanks should also go to Belinda Bourke from One Umbrella for providing morning and afternoon teas. Tuesday 13 May was National Library Technicians Day. Once again we had dinner this time it was at the Docks Hotel, Darling Harbour. The turnout was disappointing but weather was against us that night. Kevin Dudeney attended graduation ceremonies at Mt. Druitt and Ultimo TAFEs. He also attended CREATE Australia workshop relating to National Library/Information Services Qualifications. In an e-mail I received from ALIA NO recently it stated: Over the next few months, we will greatly expand the functions that office-bearers can perform online, including the ability to e-mail individual members of the group or to send out an e-broadcast. Office-bearers will also be able to identify ALIA members who have recently joined the group, and run some 'canned' reports on group statistics. Hopefully this will provide good communication to our members to keep them informed as to what is going on in the group.
