ALIA NSW Library Technicians
July-December 2002 Report
Six-monthly report to the ALIA Board of Directors
The group committee is of the opinion that during the year the group has met all of the Association's Objects in the activities that it has conducted.
The group has done the following for the year:
- Held six group meetings at various locations. All meetings are open to all ALIA members and non-members.
- Held a conbined workshop with LT groups from Victoria and ACT, in Albury in April. This was attended by 50 people. The programme for the workshop was related to technology, with sessions relating to the Internet and digital information. An enjoyable social event was held on the Saturday evening. RAECO and 3M were represented at the workshop and supported the workshop by providing drinks for the dinner. Representatives from EBSCO and Proquest also presented sessions. The support from these four companies was appreciated by all who attended.
- Group members attended the graduations of library technicians from Mt Druitt (twice) and Ultimo TAFEs and presented the ALIA prize.
- National Library Technicians Day -The group convenor and group secretary assisted on the ALIA stand at the ALIA 2002 Conference. In the evening there was a dinner to celebrate National LT Day. There were 20 people in attendance at the dinner including representatives from One Umbrella and RAECO.
- Group members participated in the ALIA NSW Forum group meetings.
- Members of the group prepared a paper in relation to discussions between ALIA president Joyce Kirk and the Minister of Education regarding the recognition of LTs working in school libraries.
Group finances
the group neither generated nor spent any funds during the year. The finances for the Albury workshop were planned separately.
Communication to group members has been difficult. Techtalk (group newsletter) has not been published this year. The group has been relying on aliaLIBTEC as its main method of communication to members. Although some group members do not subscribe to the list. The group is awaiting implementation of the communication strategy as approved by the Board of Directors.
