The Dunn and Wilson Scholarship - What is it?

The Dunn and Wilson Scholarship is a biennial award that provides the recipient/s with an opportunity to investigate a particular project relating to the practice of Library Technicians. This award has seen some outstanding research produced that have become seminal works in the progress of our profession.

The Dunn and Wilson Scholarship is open not only to individuals but also to a group or a team willing to undertake research with the 2003 recipient/s being presented with the award at the 12th National Library Technicians Conference in Brisbane in September 2003. The research culminates with a comprehensive report on the study, suitable for publication as a journal article. The report is submitted to the National Executive of the Library Technician's Group and an oration given at the biennial Library Technician's conference. The completion of the report will be a significant step in the future career of any Library Technician.

The inaugural scholarship was awarded in 1991 to Maryellen Leonard. Subsequent recipients have been, Helen Martyn; Jean Bailey (who is an invited speaker at this years conference); Lorraine Denny and Meredith Martinelli. 2001's recipient was Kerrie Blyth who's research is titled 'A comparison of education and training opportunities for Library Technicians in the UK, USA, NZ and Australia.' We look forward to hearing the results of Kerrie's research at the Brisbane conference. See this issue of Technique for an update on Kerrie's progress.

Dunn and Wilson Report - Kerrie Blyth

In September 2002 I wrote in Technique a small article to tell you about my Dunn and Wilson Scholarship plans for investigating training and education of library technicians both here and in NZ, USA and UK.

For two months I travelled around the UK meeting students and staff and library workers in many libraries to gather the information I needed and in between meetings sent home a few 'E-Postcards' to the library technician e-list.

Without exception, I was made very welcome by all the people I met, and came home with many new contacts and a wealth of memories. I was very lucky to be given a complete tour of the British Library, with morning tea and lunch thrown in to revive me so I could continue on this epic journey. That was just one of the highlights!

Before I left to travel I gave a talk to a group of library technicians, librarians and students in Devonport about the many benefits of applying for scholarships and grants.

Winning this scholarship has opened up so many new doors for me both personally and professionally and I want to strongly encourage all you ALIA library technicians, to spend between now and June 1st preparing your applications for the next award.

The deadline has been extended from April to give you just a little more time. Were you aware that a team can apply for the scholarship? Perhaps you belong to a group who have had an idea about a special project but have not had the backing to proceed with it, well here is your perfect opportunity.

Click here for more information. With sponsorship of this kind, library technicians in Australia have a terrific opportunity to research a topic of interest to them and then to share it with the rest of the world. I know that our counterparts in the UK are very envious of the opportunities and encouragement we receive so lets make the most of it. If you would like any help in preparing an application or have any other questions about the award please write to me and I will be very happy to reply.

If you would like to help with my data collection please go to the questionnaire I have posted, take a few minutes to complete it and return. For those libtekkers who have already responded to this, thanks very much, your data has been very helpful.

With March over, I have now just a few months to complete my research and prepare to deliver it at the next conference in Brisbane. This is a task I am very excited about and am looking forward to sharing it with as many of you as possible in person, or if not via the web at a later date.

About Brisbane

Brisbane is Queensland's contemporary urban capital and Australia's up and coming city. Savvy and youthful, with a slightly irreverent, 'can do' personality, Brisbane's downtown heartland offers a tantalising blend of dining, shopping, nightlife and culture.

Refuel on five continents of culinary choice and shop in Australia's busiest open air retail mecca, Brisbane's Queen Street Mall. Hit Fortitude Valley, downtown's creative hub, where hip fashion boutiques and groovy galleries blend with Chinese herbalists and gourmet grocers for a kaleidoscopic cultural encounter.

Bask in Brisbane's warm outdoor lifestyle. Alive with lush parks, tropical gardens and with its own inner city beach, walking, cycling and rollerblading around downtown is a scenic delight.

After dark, catch an international performance, have a flutter at the 24/7 Conrad Treasury Casino, cruise the river, or get seriously cool at downtown's funky mix of nightclubs and live music venues.

Brisbane's surrounding regions boast a feast of spectacular experiences including outback, islands, oceans and mountain ... all within an hour's reach of downtown.

Convenient access to a complete range of Queensland destinations makes Brisbane the perfect launch pad to a host of world-renowned attractions. The Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast (home to the Crocodile Hunter), World Heritage listed rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef are all on Brisbane's doorstep.

That's it in a nutshell (Kingaroy Queensland of course): Yvonne Brock, Conference Convenor, 12th ALIA National Library Technicians Conference, 9-12 September 2003, Brisbane Sheraton Hotel and Towers

Museums and Libraries/Information Services Industry Training Package Review

CREATE Australia, the national industry training body for the cultural industries, is currently managing Phase 2 of the Museums and Libraries/Information Services Industry Training Package Review.

Expected to be completed in early 2004, the review will consider the final report from Phase 1 and produce a final report outlining changes to the package. A Project Steering Committee comprising key stakeholders from all sectors of the industry oversees the review. These include educators and practitioners from both the Museums and Library/Information sectors.

Meredith Martinelli, IT training co-ordinator at Macquarie University and NSW LT Deputy Convenor is a member of the Project Steering Committee. Meredith is happy to receive feedback and suggestions relating to the training package. A copy of the Phase 1 report can be obtained from Create Australia by contacting Jennie Howard: jhoward@createaust.com.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address).

What's a Training package? Training packages identify the skills and qualifications needed by people working across all areas of Museums and Libraries/Information Services.
