TechNique: December 2002

More than 80 floats took part in the 15th annual Port Adelaide Enfield Christmas Parade on Saturday 16 November with, of course, a guest appearance by Father Christmas. Floats were entered from a broad cross-section of the community and were joined by marching bands, including brass bands, bagpipes, and a drum band.

The Port Adelaide Enfield Libraries chose what we thought was an appropriate theme for us of storybook characters. Staff from all five sites and some of their families took part. We had Maid Marian with a couple of trusty merry men in Lincoln green; a princess carrying a frog waiting for the kiss to turn him back into a handsome prince (unfortunately he was still waiting at the end of the parade); and a beautiful fairy grandmother in frilly pink lace watching over a picturesquely grubby Cinderella. Harry Potter was there with magic wand and Nimbus 2000, but managed to keep his feet firmly on the ground for the occasion. Grandma managed to get out of bed and come along in nightgown, frilly nightcap and shawl accompanied by a pretty little Red Riding Hood with a basket of goodies and a brave woodsman who had fortunately already despatched the wolf. Then there was Pippi Longstocking, Puss-in-boots, Cruella de Ville (with just one Dalmatian), B1 and B2, Where's Wally, a couple of clowns and fairies and suitably ugly witches. How did the Wicked Witch of the West get to be child and youth librarian?

It's been a pretty grim old world for the last couple of months and it was great to forget all that and enjoy the fun and the sun for a day. After it was over we adjourned to the Port Adelaide Public Library for lunch and to talk about what we had done well, what we could have done better and what we will do next year!
