TechNique: September 2002National Library Technician convenorAs of 1 July, the National Library Technicians Group had a change of leadership. Stephen Coppins who took on the responsibility of National convenor at the Hobart National LT Conference announced his resignation from the position and the National Committee, and indeed all library technicians, would like to take this opportunity to thank Stephen for his commitment and contribution to the LT group over recent years. The group now welcomes Lothar Retzlaff as the new National convenor. Lothar would be known to many of you through his lively contribution to LIBTEC, attendance and presentations at conferences and workshops and a prior role as convenor of the WA LT group. Read Lothar's contribution later in this newsletter. What or Who's new at ALIA?
Meet Georgina Dale: member liaison officer I have been involved in Association activities for a long time and have held a number of office-bearer positions including being the founding convenor of the OPAL (National) group and most recently as convenor of the Knowledge and Information Specialist WA group. So I very much bring field experience to the position I hold at ALIA National Office. I am looking forward to working with the groups. I hope that I can work with the office-bearers to simplify administration of the groups so that the office-bearers can focus on what the group wants to achieve whether it is organising informal networking activities or formal CPD activities and generally to keeping the groups dynamic and able to meet the expectations of the members. Georgina can be contacted at ALIA National office on 02 6215 8229 or via georgina.dale@alia.org.au.
Susan Magnay: manager, planning policy I have worked in a range of jobs at the State Library of NSW and before that at the National Library of Australia. Before leaving the State Library in 2001 I managed its Document Delivery Service and was involved in resource sharing policy and practice as chair of the National Resource Sharing Working Group. During 2001 I worked in England as a program manager at the Joint Information Systems Committee, the central organisation for the development and application of information systems and technology for further and higher education in the UK. Susan can be contacted at ALIA on 02 6215 8225 or via e-mail susan.magnay@alia.org.au Dunn and Wilson Scholarship reportEarly in 2001 and as a member of ALIA I took the opportunity to apply for the Dunn and Wilson Scholarship, a biennial award open to practicing library technicians. The aim behind the scholarship, which enjoys the sponsor-ship of LJ Cullen Bookbinders in NSW and Apollo-Moon Bookbinders in Victoria, is "to provide library technicians with the opportunity to investigate a particular project relating to what we practice with the aim of increasing our professional occupational experience. When I received the news that I had been successful, I immediately made contact again with our international counterparts again and asked for meetings with students, educators, managers and technicians in the UK. As I have been teaching in the LIS course for eight years, I am eagerly looking forward to researching education and training elsewhere in the world and will begin my appointments in Aberdeen, Scotland late in August. After that I will travel south through Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Huddersfield finishing in London where I have been asked to be guest speaker for two groups. It seems they are interested in knowing how we are faring in Australia. In my spare time I shall try and send some snippets about my experiences as I travel around, but to hear my full scholar-ship report, head to Brisbane (the place to be in 2003) in September 2003 for our next National Library Technician Conference.
Kerrie Blyth ALIATec CP Library Technician "I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library" EmployLTWhat is it? employLT is a nationally co-ordinated employment posting service that is provided to all members on the aliaLIBTEC e-list. It provides current job postings throughout Australia and New Zealand direct through e-mail to subscibers of LIBTEC. Managed by the Library Technician Groups National employment co-ordinator, vacant positions are actively searched for using internet search skills and push technology and then posted onto the aliaLIBTEC e-list. The creation of Lothar Retzlaff (the current National convenor of the ALIA National Library Technician Group) in September 2001, employLT's aim was to have a central posting site for employment opportunities, gathering postings from several sites, including non-library related employment sites, and directing these listings to the relevant e-list (LIBTEC). employLT utilises a range of websites including:
At present there are approximately 50 sites searched and posted on the LIBTEC e-list on a Wednesday and Saturday evening. This is has been established the the premium time for collecting the bulk of the jobs posted for that week. Postings are also released at other times when required. Since its conception in September 2001, employLT has posted numerous jobs on the e-list and it continues to grow. To receive the employLT postings you need to join the ALIA LIBTEC e-list. Go to the ALIA e-list group page, locate the ALIA LIBTEC group and follow the instructions to join the list. Listings are sent to your e-mail as a part of the general list discussion messages. 9-12 September 2003
Blue skies, sunshine, and great hospitality awaits every delegate to... Did you know that it is only just over twelve months, and approximately 375 days until your visit to the sunshine state? So what has the conference committee been up to since returning from the fabulous Hobart Conference? The conference executive team continue to meet monthly and the program, social and marketing convenors now have extra meetings popping up with sub-committees. Work has now been finalised on the Trade and Sponsorship Prospectus and a Trade and Sponsorship contact list finalised and prioritised. We have established a delegate contact list. If you wish to be added to the list please send you contact details to Vanessa our event co-ordinator at Organisers Australia, e-mail: vanessa@orgaus.com.au Have you visited our new webpage? Letters of invitation have been sent to keynote speakers and are now confirmed. A visit to our webpage next month will reveal all: http://conferences.alia.org.au/ Dates for 'call for papers' will be announced shortly. Once again keep visiting our webpage and checking inCite. Our first Brisbane marketing article written by our PR convenor will be in the August issue of inCite. The programme/education convenor has also written an overview on the conference theme, which will be published in the September issue of inCite. All of this seems like a lot of hard yakka, but be assured we also have a lot of fun. There are afternoon tea sessions with prospective workshop presenters, drinks and nibbles at potential social venues, dinner meetings. Fundraising activities, not to mention a huge learning curve for all.
