ALIA National Library Technicians
National Library Technicians Day
The National Library Technicians Day forms part of the Australian Library Week celebrations, and will become an annual event, endorsed by ALIA.
The Day will be celebrated on the Tuesday of Australian Library Week, and will provide the opportunity for library technicians to promote ALIA, the profession, and their role in libraries and to celebrate their many achievements.
Celebrations where practicable should follow the theme for Australian Library Week, and the objectives will be:
- To promote Australian Library Week and the role of library technicians in the industry.
- To celebrate the commitment and achievements of library technicians.
- To encourage all library workers to join in the celebrations to assist a greater unity amongst the library profession.
- To promote and enhance membership of ALIA with the intent of increasing membership of the group.
The following are broad guidelines to assist the divisions in planning their celebrations with the aim of achieving a range of activities across metropolitan and regional areas in all states and territories:
- Plan, co-ordinate and organise celebrations to ensure the activities reflect where practicable the theme for Australian Library Week.
- Ensure that the range of activities meets the division's aims, needs and requirements.
- Promote the National Library Technicians Day activities widely through articles in inCite, state and territory newsletters, on the aliaLIBTEC discussion list, in local newspapers, fliers, mail-outs, displays at local libraries, shopping centre malls, and within the workplace.
- Market ALIA by raising awareness of and the profile of the Association, by outlining the benefits of membership to students, library technicians and library assistants, and by encouraging them to become members.
- Promote and celebrate library technician achievements and individuals, through the presentation of Merit and Achievement Awards in states and territories.
- Encourage involvement of library technicians on organising committees for activities for Australian Library Week, and encourage participation on marketing and promotional committees.
- Utilise display areas for promotional marketing opportunities to highlight the roles of library technicians, and your library throughout the workplace.
These guidelines are flexible, and may be adapted and adjusted to suit particular divisions, themes and location requirements. Activities may include a range of breakfasts, lunches, picnic or dinner celebrations, or other activities as deemed appropriate by the group (for example: a library walkathon, walking tours, historical libraries, or libraries within the central business district).
If you require further clarification of these guidelines, please contact the convenor of the ALIA National Library Technician Group.
