Recent Events

The ACRL Arts Section and Instruction Section Virtual Poster Sessions, 2007 The ACRL (Association of College & Research Libraries) Arts Section and Instruction Section presented Virtual Poster Sessions in connection with their joint program at ALA 2007 in Washington, D.C. The conference program, titled "Eye to I: Visual Literacy Meets Information Literacy," explored the relationship between these two sets of abilities. The poster sessions are available through the Eye to I site till December, 2007.

Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium, Chicago, July 2007

ALA TechSource in collaboration with ACRL held the first annual gaming, learning and libraries symposium for academic, public and school libraries. Gaming and literacy experts James Paul Gee and Henry Jenkins keynoted the event by exploring how libraries fit into the intersection of gaming and the digital learning landscape. Pictures, blog posts and media from each session are being made available at the symposium site.

CILIP event, "Information Literacy in Schools and Higher Education" Spring 2007

CILIP held the training event "Information Literacy in Schools and Higher Education" in Spring and power point presentations are now available at their site.

CILR launched

The Centre for Information Literacy Research was launched in July by the Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield. It has a mission to explore, illuminate and develop the field of information literacy through the conduct and stimulation of research and related activities. The centre has also been launched in Second Life, the virtual world. Access is available via http://tinyurl.com/28ef2t.

Upcoming Events

ANZIIL Symposium Series Seven, Why we do what we do: theory and action, Monday 29 - Tuesday 30 October 2007 Symposium 7 continues ANZIL's popular series of practical, case study driven symposia on information literacy. The Hobart Symposium will provide a theoretic basis for librarians to think about and apply in teaching programs, collaboration for curriculum development, and other services that develop information literacy in tertiary education. A preliminary program is available at the symposium site.

The 5th International Lifelong Learning Conference, 16-19 June 2008 Rydges Resort, Yeppoon, Queensland.

The 5th International Lifelong Learning Conference will be held in June 2008 at Rydges Resort, Yeppoon, Queensland. The theme is Lifelong Learning: Reflecting on Successes and Framing Futures. Potential authors, presenters and workshop conveners are invited to submit abstracts (maximum of 300 words) addressing the Conference theme. Suggested sub themes are available for consideration, but are not intended to limit the imagination.

The closing date for the submission of abstracts is 7 September 2007. Abstracts for refereed papers, presentations, workshops and symposia sessions will be assessed by the Program Committee and authors will be notified of the result by the end of September 2007. The Conference offers a variety of options: Submission and presentation of a refereed paper; Presentation of a non-refereed paper; Presentation of a workshop; Presentation of a symposium session. Konstanz Workshop on Information Literacy (KWIL), Konstanz Germany, November 2007

The University of Konstanz is holding the first Konstanz Workshop on Information Literacy themed 'Advanced users: Information Literacy and Customised Services'. The Library has been doing extensive research and practice over the last two years in Information literacy for advanced users, e.g. master and doctoral students, scholars. Further information is available at the KWIL conference site. USE-2008, From Information Provision to Knowledge Production, University of Oulu Finland, 23-25 June, 2008

The international conference USE-2008 aims at addressing issues related to theoretical conceptions and empirical applications of research on information use in knowledge production processes at different levels of activity in society.

Submissions are invited on all topics concerning information use in knowledge production processes. The deadline is November 30 2007. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by February 13, 2008. A more detailed call for papers can be found at the conference website.

University of British Colombia, Okanagan Library will host WILU 2008. The conference theme is 'Information Literacy Uncorked'. World Library and Information Congress: 73rd IFLA General Conference and Council, Durban, South Africa, 19-23 August 2007

The Information Literacy Section (IL) and the Academic and Research Libraries Section (ARL) of IFLA are planning a joint open program at the World Library and Information Congress. Further information can be found at the conference site.

Recent Publications

Volume 1, Number 1 (2007) of Communications in Information Literacy (CIL) is available. CIL is an independent, professional, refereed electronic journal dedicated to advancing knowledge, theory, and research in the area of information literacy. Volume 1, Issue 2 (January 2007) of the Journal of Information Literacy (JIL) is now available. JIL is an international peer reviewed journal that includes articles, conference and book reviews.

Library Philosophy and Practice is a peer-reviewed electronic journal that publishes articles exploring the connection between library practice and the philosophy and theory behind it. The annual volume for 2007 has now been published and includes papers on Information Literacy's evaluative component and critical Information Literacy.
