ALIA Information Literacy Forum

Meeting minutes

Tuesday 16 August 2005

Attendees: Helen Partridge, Helena Zobec, Lesley Ngatai, AnneMaree Lloyd, Mandy Lupton
Apologies: Mark Jones, Jane Knowles, Liz Burke

1. Forum

The group spent quite a bit of time discussing the future of the forum. All present were eager to see the forum continue and for it to develop as a 'community of enquiry'. The main concern was encouraging the non-academic librarians to contribute. It was suggested that many non-academic librarians might feel 'invisible on the list' or 'not see themselves as part of the list'. The challenge is to help non-academic librarians to see themselves as part of the 'community'. The following strategy was proposed: drawing from the following sectors - public, TAFE, teacher-librarian and special libraries invite people (being careful to cover all states) to give short (a few sentences) responses to the following questions:

  • What is IL for you?
  • What has been you biggest IL challenge?
  • What has been your biggest IL success?
  • (or questions similar to this).

Hopefully a small number of people will respond (two-four) and their answers can be placed on the forum with a new sector being explored each month or two (i.e. November - public libraries; February - TAFE libraries etc). Forum members will be invited to share their responses to the questions or to ask questions give feedback to the responses posted.

Action:

  • Each member of the group to contact public and state librarians of all levels (senior, new grad etc) and invite them to participate.
  • Lesley to draft up a standard letter of invitation to be used by the group when inviting people to participate.

2. Next meeting

4:00pm Tuesday 11 October 2005.
