3. Business arising from the minutes:
Proposed visit from ALIA President, Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM. This matter is dealt with under General Business 6.1

4. Treasurer's report: In the absence of Treasurer Robyn Murray: no report.

5. Correspondence: Email correspondence between Ms Sue Hutley, ALIA Executive Director and Secretary, Lainey Furness, about our request for ALIA President, Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM to visit our NSWFNC Regional Group. Details under Agenda item 6.1 and 7.1.1

6. Agenda items:

  1. Proposed visit to ALIAFNC by ALIA President Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM and ALIAFNC input to the National Advisory Congress 2006

Lainey Furness (Secretary) emailed details of this Agenda Item 6.1 to the ALIANSWFNC elist on 15 June 2006 so that members would have time to consider the implications of the requirements for this proposed visit before tonight's meeting.

Ms Sue Hutley, ALIA Executive Director, has suggested that ALIA President, Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM could visit our Group in early August (date to be arranged). This visit would take place on the basis that we hold a regional meeting to discuss the 2006 NAC agenda topics and to formally contribute to the NAC process. All ALIA Groups are expected to provide input to the NAC through an allocated Local Liaison and/or Director in a formal process. For this meeting, Ms Schmidmaier would act as the Director for the ALIANSWFNC Group instead of Ms Helen Partridge or Ms Rachael Browning, and she would probably be accompanied by Ms Claudia Davies, our current Local Liaison officer based in Brisbane.

It was suggested that Ms Schmidmaier would meet informally with representatives from the Institutional membership, personal members, and any other library personnel from 4:30-5:30. There would be a short talk or Q & A session with Ms Schmidmaier, followed by nibbles and drinks before the formal regional NAC meeting is conducted.

Des Stewart has offered the Manning Clarke Room at Southern Cross University as a venue for the meeting. Lainey to confirm availability with Libby Pownell at SCU Ph 6620 3539.

Following discussion among the members, it was felt that there may not be sufficient interest amongst the membership to provide input to the NAC component of a meeting with Ms Schmidmaier. A motion was put that Convenor Jennifer Kirton contact ALIA to request a visit from Ms Schmidmaier as part of her outreach commitment to Groups.
Moved: Cathie Nilon Seconded: Louise Somerville Carried

7. Any other business: General information for members.

The following items were tabled, and are included here for the information of members.

  1. Information relating to agenda item 6.1
    1. 1.1Background to Agenda item 6.1

Jennifer Kirton (Convenor) recently contacted the ALIA National office to see if we could arrange for ALIA President, Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM, to visit our NSWFNC Regional Group. As Jennifer was on leave, Ms Sue Hutley, ALIA Executive Director, phoned Lainey Furness (Secretary) on 14 June 2006 to discuss possible arrangements.

One of Ms Schmidmaier's roles within ALIA is as a Director of the National Advisory Congress http://www.alia.org.au/governance/nac/2006/. The National Advisory Congress (NAC) operates as a two-tier model with regional meetings to be held in July-August 2006. As has been the case for the past three years, the 2006 NAC will focus on celebrating the successes of the association, its groups and members.

The national meeting will be held in association with the CLICK 06 conference: a half-day national meeting on the afternoon of 19 September 2006. As there is no ALIA funding support available for travel or accommodation, it is suggested that regional representatives to the national NAC meeting are selected from delegates who will be attending the conference.

The topics for this year's NAC program for the regional meetings include:

      1. Celebrating success stories
      2. Review of three ALIA policy statements - Statement on Free Access to Information, Statement on Professional Conduct, and ALIA Core Values Statement
      3. Planning - achievements in 2006, forward planning for 2007
      4. 4.Local issues

For further information about the NAC go to http://www.alia.org.au/governance/nac/2006/ or contact membership at ALIA National Office 1800 020 071 (02 6215 8229) or email

    3. New State Librarian and Chief Executive appointed

On 13 July 2006, Belinda Hutchinson, President of the Library Council of NSW, announced the appointment of Regina Sutton as the new State Librarian and Chief Executive of the State Library of New South Wales. Ms Sutton will formally take up the position on Monday 10 July 2006.

The appointment is the result of a comprehensive nation-wide search by the executive search firm, Egon Zehnder, following the retirement of Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM in April.

'The Library Council of NSW is delighted with Ms Sutton's appointment," Ms Hutchinson said. "Regina brings tremendous business acumen to this role coupled with a diverse and successful leadership portfolio. We believe her skills will build on the Library's recent achievements as it moves towards its Centenary in 2010.'

The State Library is one of oldest libraries in Australia with a collection that documents, more than any other institution, the discovery of Australia and the Pacific. This collection contains over 5 million items including photographs, manuscripts, journals, maps and books and is valued at $1.9 billion. In more recent times, the State Library has repositioned itself as a 21st century library with the development of electronic services and the launch of its leading-edge website, [established when Ms Dagmar Schmidmaier AM was State Librarian see Agenda item 6.1 and 7.1.2].

'Regina has expertise in managing multi-faceted organisations, with leadership across a range of industries, sectors and regions in major corporations such as Kodak, Telstra and most recently IBM," Ms Hutchinson said. "She has a strong background and experience in online services, information technology, sales and marketing, document imaging, business planning and management which makes her well placed to lead the future development of the Library's online services through the www.atmitchell.com project.'

Ms Sutton spent 14 years with the Eastman Kodak Company where she held senior business leadership roles across several imaging market segments in the US and Asia. She was the General Manager of the Document Imaging Business for Greater Asia, based in Tokyo and then Sydney. Following Kodak's acquisition of ENCAD, a leading global printer manufacturer, she was appointed CEO of this company based in San Diego, California with a business revenue of $160 million and 1000 employees. In Australia Ms Sutton has worked for IBM and Telstra, and her most recent position was IBM's Director for the Distribution and Industrial sectors.

Ms Sutton has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Administration and a Masters degree in Business Administration. Ms Sutton immigrated to Australia in October 2002 to join her Australian partner and take up permanent residency.
