July-December 2003

Six-monthly report to the ALIA Board of Directors

Liz Blumson(new) - Convenor
Loris Phair - Secretary
Bernadette Franzoni (new) - Treasurer

Group Communication

Up until November 2003 the group communicated via the e-list cysalia. Membership November 2003 was 133. In December 2003 e-list members were transferred to a new e-list libll (Libraries for Lifelong Learning). Membership of this list is currently 150 strong.

The 2003 AGM was held on 4 December. We celebrated the season with Christmas cake and champagne.

Activities

In December 2002 a networking group 'Libraries for Lifelong Learning' was formed. The development and growth of this group took priority over CYS activities between July to December 2003 (post Frameworking the Future seminar). Many CYS members participated in its formation and development. A broad membership base was sought out for the group from the voluntary, tertiary, children's lit and academic environments. This group has a broader scope than CYS:

Libraries for Lifelong Learning aims to facilitate the development of a co-operative environment where learners can seamlessly access the widest choice of materials to support their information, leisure, cultural and social needs.

The Libraries for Lifelong Learning network met regularly during 2003. The intention is for the two groups - Libraries for Lifelong Learning and the ALIA Children's and Youth Services - to work co-operatively wherever possible. The two groups will meet together; plan and host events together; share each others networks, information, resources, space, and professional development activities, and advocate on each other's behalf.

Activities for the next 6 months

  • There will not be an annual seminar. CYS will concentrate on implementing the strategies for partnerships that the three previous CYS seminars - Profusion, Essential Connections and Frameworking the Future - have developed.
  • Recruitment drive using libll e-list and networking activities to increase numbers of participants in particular from primary schools and tertiary libraries and government sectors.
  • Promote Frameworking the future: guiding principles for cross-sectoral co-operation to key groups at a State and national level.
  • CYS members to have a strong presence at cross sectoral professional development and library networking events.
