Annual general meeting

16 November 2005, State Library of Queensland, West End.

Present:
Maureen O'Shea, Denise O'Connor, Loris Phair, Jennifer Hall, Liz Blumson.

Business:

1. Report

  • The convenor, Maureen O'Shea, reported on the successful seminar, Powering our partnerships: Learning through libraries, held on Wednesday 8 June 2005 in partnership with the School Library Association of Queensland, Brisbane Sub-committee at the Brisbane School of Distance Education.

  • The convenor, together with Anne Spillman spoke at The Queensland Public Library Association Conference in Toowoomba.

2. Election of office bearers

Being the annual general meeting all positions were declared vacant.

  • Maureen O'Shea was elected convenor, nominated by Liz Blumson, seconded by Loris Phair.

  • Liz Blumson, was elected secretary/treasurer, nominated by Maureen O'Shea, seconded by Denise O'Connor.

Nomination will be called for regional representative to co-ordinate local activities. Denise O'Connor will co-ordinate.

  • Jennifer Hall has been nominated as the regional representative for the Logan District.

  • Loris Phair has been nominated as the regional representative for Brisbane.

3. General business

Activies for 2006

Professional sharing

Members will be asked to engage in professional sharing by reporting to the e-mail list (please remove '.nospam' from address) on ideas and developments gathered from conferences and other activities they have attended during the year.

It is also envisaged that a member of the group will speak at the Queensland Public Library Association Conference in June and the School Library Association of Queensland Conference in September.

All booked up - ideas exchange

It was suggested that regional groups organise an afternoon gathering in March to discuss ideas for how to run a book club for either adults or young people. The gathering could be held at a book/coffee shop. Suggestions for discussion include:

  • Who is the book club for?

  • When, how often, and where will your book club meet?

  • How long will the meetings last?

  • Will you serve food?

  • What's the role of the leader, or will you even designate a leader?

  • What types of books do you want to read - fiction, memoirs, nonfiction, a combination?

  • Contemporary works, classics, both?

  • Who makes up the questions for the group to discuss?
