3. General business

  1. Secretary tabled previous minutes from last meeting. Acceptance moved by Noleen Fleming seconded by Liz Blumson.
  2. Liz Blumson, Convenor, gave an update of the launch of the Six Guiding Principle at SLAQ conference in June; including a history of their inception, the creation of the flyer and planned dissemination to key stakeholders.
  3. Liz Blumson spoke reported attending the Regional ALIA National Policy Congress Meeting. Some dissatisfaction was expressed by delegates to the meeting about the way ALIA fails to support grass-roots movements that promote the profession. Those present at the CYS meeting were invited to consider further feedback to ALIA on this point.
  4. Planning is to begin for a CYS Seminar to be held from June 2005 to July 2005. It is suggested that we look at partnering with SLAQ and a sub-committee will be formed to explore this option. A possible venue would be Hillbrook Anglican School in Enoggera, for the end of Term Two 2005. Suggested speakers for the conference were Lea Giles-Peters State Librarian or Anna Raunik.
  5. Sabina O'Callaghan, BCC Reading Co-ordinator spoke about the 'One book, One Brisbane' program: Its history, controversies and successes. Between 5000 and 7000 people attended library events this year. The theme for 2005 may be 'Spies and detectives' and the event is scheduled for the third week in July, allowing partnerships with local author groups and tie-ins for children.
  6. Ann Spelman (SLQ), spoke about the summer reading program for 2004 and 2005, 'Reading Rules' with support from popular author Phil Kettle, there is to be an interactive website, galleries, e-books, polls, games etc. This will be promoted to schools through EQ. BCC are also running a program, 'It's a crime to miss it', and will be offering a crime and detective theme in conjunction with local libraries and writing groups. Anita Bell will be running workshops for 12 to14 year olds. There will be science and forensics workshops too. A national summer reading program would be wonderful to see.
  7. A date was set for the AGM - 4:00pm on 4 November 2004 at UQL Cyberschool, St Lucia.
  8. Wendy Horwood, Central City Library Team Leader, told the group about the 'joint facility' plan for the new library being built in the Suncorp Tower in town and then gave us a tour of the current library. We met the 'Ask a Librarian' on duty who was responding to e-mail reference queries from all over the world.

4. Meeting closed at 6:00pm
