These are some of the display ideas brainstormed at the Pre-bookweek Extravaganza - please add your ideas to the list
* A photography competition. (Two sections: primary and youth). Take a photo to represent a book week shortlisted book.
* Film shorts competition – create a short film to represent a book week shortlisted book or a scene from the story.->*
* Design a story bridge “What would your story bridge look like? What characters or books would be crossing your story bridge?”
* Write a few lines on how you would build bridges between age groups, cultures, people who are different, etc. The entries could be displayed on a noticeboard or blog.
* We’re going across the story bridge… imagine what we’ll find on the other side! Draw a picture, make a collage, write a poem about what is waiting on the other side of the bridge.
* Six degrees of separation: a young person reads a book and writes a review (add the reviews to the library catalogue) with links to build a bridge to other books (eg. plot / character / setting etc.) Encourage them to use tools like LibraryThing, Magpies, Who writes like…
* Bridge design – reverse garbage + 30 minutes. Go!! http://www.reversegarbage.org.au/
* Using Moviemaker, young people design an advertisement for the library website
* Design picturebook or poster featuring a troll
* Draw a famous bridge
* Draw a book character walking across a bridge
* Name five famous bridges
* Bridge two books – what links them, what’s different?
* Ask the kids to do the best rooster call (inspired by Kip by Christina Booth)
* Judge a book by it’s cover competition – Have a competition before the official winner’s announcement for older readers to choose the likely winner by the cover. Have a lucky draw to select the winner OR ask entrants to say why they liked the cover and what it might be about and judge the winner on the best reason.
* Make characters from old shoes (inspired by Schumann the Shoeman by Stella Danalis)
* Crossword relating to themes within each book
* Find book titles in a find-a-word or crossword
* Write your own story to cross the bridge
* Name and illustrate five books that helped them cross the story bridge on their way to becoming readers.
* Poster design competition.
* Dioramas – build a hut from the 1800’s (inspired by Australian Backyard Explorer by Peter Macinnis) OR a bridge to the land of loved and well read books
* Storywriting competition – inspired by a book cover with a 500 word limit and illustrations.
* CBCA Junior Judges Project 2010
* Terrible Plop colouring competition
* Mrs Mac also has some great competition ideas.
* Build a bridge competition out of lego
* Guessing competition of characters of well known characters - pictures of characters (mattch with seperate names)
* Pre-formatted stencil colouring competitions (CBC website)
* Open writing in the format of a poem, a short story (~1000 word limit), or a comic strip (5-15 frames). It must include mention of a “book” and a “bridge”.
