Six-monthly report to the ALIA Board of Directors
Objectives
- ALIA Children's and Youth Services (NSW) promotes library services to children and youth, highlighting children's literature and fostering professional development of members. (ALIA Objects 2 and 3)
- The committee co-ordinates the national ALIA awards for children's librarians, promotes children's librarianship within the profession, and encourages networking and communication between members. (ALIA Objects 2, 3 and 4)
- The committee also co-ordinates the national aliaCYSS e-list facilitating networking around Australia. (ALIA Object 3)
CYS (NSW) committee
Cameron Morley tendered his resignation from the committee in January 2003.

Events
Switching them on to reading: books and young children 126 people attended the Switching them on to reading seminar on 1 April 2003 at the State Library of NSW. Presenters included:
- Mem Fox - keynote speaker and her presentation was also the Nancy Booker Honour Lecture for 2003.
- Genimaree Panozzo (Moreland Public Library in Victoria) Genimaree completed a study tour in the UK before launching the highly successful Bookstart pre-reading kits at Moreland Public Library.
- Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (Brotherhood of St Laurence)
- Carolyn Bourke - Fairfield City Library Service
- Narelle Lightfoot - Central Northern Libraries
- Jo Oliver - Camden Library Service
Participants came from NSW, SA, Tasmania and QLD and evaluations were all extremely positive.
Pre-Book Week Extravaganza : Book Week - Oceans of Stories
This year the Children's and Youth Services (NSW) Group and Wollongong City Council are co-operated to host two Pre-Book Week Extravaganzas:
- Friday 20 June at 4:30pm at Burwood Council Chambers
- Friday 27 June at 4:30pm at Corrimal District Library and Community Centre
The total attendance was 90 people and the choice of locations effectively doubled the audience from the previous year.
The CYS group successfully applied to all of the short-listed publishers for permission to use the books for:
- Displays in the libraries
- Readers Theatre - dramatising scenes from a book
- Storytelling
- Cross words and find-a-words
- Competitions (colouring in etc.)
during the Extravaganza.
National Awards
Bess Thomas
To be presented in 2004 at the ALIA Conference. Funding options are being considered to sustain the award.
Marjorie Cotton
To be presented in 2004 at the ALIA Conference.
Marjorie Cotton Isherwood passed away on 2 February 2003. A memorial service will be held in co-operation with the staff of Woollahra Library during 2003.
Publicity and Promotional Activities
Website
No recent additions have been made to the website.
E-list
The e-list continues to be moderately active. It has proved a very useful method of disseminating information on a range of children's and youth services issues. There are currently 243 members on the e-list.
Planned events
Management Seminar 2003
Date: 24 October 2003
Venue: Burwood Council Chambers
Theme: Summer Reading Programs and children's Book Clubs.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Christine Harris' I don't want to go to school is the title chosen for the National Simultaneous Storytime on Friday 5 September 2003. In 2004 a selection panel will be established to choose the title.
