Mongolia Central Library reports

This news update was received recently courtesy of colleagues in the IFLA Regional Section. APSIG would welcome country reports from libraries and associations in our region.

  1. Mongolian Foundation for Open Society, the Soros Foundation and Mongolian State Library organised 8th Book Day celebration 20-27 May 2003. The website is at http://www.mclibrary.edu.mn/

During the celebration, there were many activities: opening the Children's Book House in the State Central Library, held a first training of Digitization in Libraries, forum on subject Library Automation Software and more.

  2. During the Book Day celebration, three trainers came to Mongolia to teach: Mr. Adolf Knoll, deputy director for Research and Technological Development at the National Library of the Czech Republic, taught the "Digitization in Libraries" course.
Ms Audrone Glosiene and Ms Vita Mozuraite from Vilnius University, Lithuania, taught Public Library Management and Elementary School Library services. Our MCL is going to digitize one Mongolian Children's Book by practice.
  3. MCL has a co-operation with the US Embassy in Mongolia. Michael Paul Huff, information resource officer in American Center for Educational Exchange at the American Embassy in Beijing, visited in Mongolia in 28 May and gave training in MARC, metadata and Dublin Core to the MCL librarians.
  4. We need to develop our four branches in districts of Ulaanbaatar city. There are no computers, no library software, no network and no Internet access. But in the MCL there are all these features. We need to share MCL resources to branches. What can you do if you have this situation?
  5. MCL has 4 service rooms: Natural Science, Social science, American Book Center and Legal Information Center. The Legal Information Center (LIC) is built by Soros grant in 1999-2002.

Thank you for your attention and comments.
