ALIA Asia Pacific Special Interest Group

Minutes of the meeting 4 June 2002

National Library of Australia, Canberra.

  1. Present: Jeanette Regan (convener), A. McKenzie, George Miller, Susan Prentice, Deveni Temu, Marie Sexton (minutes)

  2. Business arising:
    2.1
ALIA Guidelines for Assistance to Library and Information Personnel in Developing Countries: JR would confirm if the ALIA Board had confirmed the guidelines which she had prepared at their May meeting.
The next step would be to publicize the guidelines widely.
Publication in the APSIG newsletter July 2002 issue was proposed as one way to make them well-known. The guidelines should be also mounted on the ALIA website.
2.2 Travellers' Tales, 14 May: speakers were Nat Williams, exhibition manager, NLA, on the Treasures Exhibition and his experiences in visiting the world's libraries; Richard Stone on his travels in Indochina and Deveni Temu on the theological libraries conference in Auckland. The meeting had gone well with 20 attending.
    Refreshments had been served.

  3. Judy Blood: Judy's visit to Canberra on 30 May 2002 was discussed. Judy who has been working in UNTL (National University of East Timor) met George, Amelia and Marie to discuss the situation in East Timor and how Australian librarians could help.
UNTL was lacking in resources and Pluto Press in Sydney had a website under development to be a focus for possible donations and advice on how to send materials.
It was agreed that APSIG should seek to organise a public meeting in Canberra to hear Judy speak. Jeanette would investigate if a meeting at ANU could be set up. Jeanette would see if Judy needed some financial support for her visit. Prof James Fox would be a good contact to help set up the meeting. Early August, within the academic term, was a possible period for the meeting, possibly the week starting 5 August. Ensuring that Judy met AUSaid, DFAT and other governmental contacts would be an important part of her next visit to Canberra.
ALIA support for help for UNTL would be sought. Jeanette would see if Alan Bundy were visiting Canberra and might be associated with support for UNTL at a governmental level.
AMK undertook to contact Judy about an article for the July issue of the APSIG newsletter.

  4. APSIG Newsletter: the production of the March 2002 issue which Sharon had produced was welcomed. As much help as possible with articles and suggestions would be provided to Sharon for the July issue.

  5. Mentoring conference: Jeanette reported on the conference session she had addressed on mentoring at the British Association of Law Libraries. There was little interest in Asia and the Pacific however at the meeting.

  6. Forthcoming program:
    6.1
East Timor public meeting: early August
6.2 St Mark's Theological Library visit: 5:00pm. Tuesday 17 September. Visit to see the Pacific collection and tour St Mark's. Refreshments would be served.
6.3 Travellers' Tales: in the last half of October. The date of 29 October was suggested. MS would check on the availability of the Conference Room. Possible speakers - Ewan Maidment on his visit to the Pacific for the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau; George Miller on his forthcoming visit to Flores, Indonesia plus one other.
6.4 Christmas lunch: MS would check on a possible venue, initially with Dorothea Polonyi.

  7. Next meeting: Jeanette said that we should be able to meet via the e-mail. If a meeting were required it could be in early July particularly if needed for the meeting on East Timor. MS would make a provisional booking on a meetings room at NLA.
