3.3 Unconference

Paul Reynolds is coming to Perth in October 2007. Marg Allen thinks he would be a good speaker for the Unconference but only if it suits.

Liz reported on the activity by the Unconference Google group, where participants were describing the success of the recent Bar Camp held in Fremantle (model where participants used a wiki to nominate topics, speakers and ideas for the day, very unstructured, tech focus not libraries although some librarians participated).

Meeting agreed an unstructured model for the Unconference could go ahead on 3 August. However there were concerns that there should be some structure, given 3 August is a Friday (work time for most).

Meeting agreed to progress with advertising August 3 Unconference and see what the activity on the wiki is like. Emails to be sent to WAIN and ALIAwest. Liz to advise Kathryn Greenhill to go ahead.

Another event could be arranged to coincide with Paul Reynolds visit - to be arranged closer to the time.

Carolyn asked Liz to formally ask Marg Allen for the use of a room at the State Library for the Unconference, to comply with public sector regulations.

3.5 Visit by ALIA Executive Director , Sue Hutley

Sue Hutley will be in Perth and available on Tuesday 28 August and Wednesday 29 August 2007.

Liz is checking with Marg Allen her availability for an ALIA 70th Birthday celebration and combined Sharr Medal presentation. Will probably be at the State Library, in the early evening. (subsequent emails have confirmed Tuesday 28 August).

Discussed having another event to leverage Sue's visit. Decided it was too close to first Leading Libraries event to have another. Discussed possibility of an informal breakfast with Sue - suggested Swan Brewery or South Perth. This would just involve taking RSVPs and making booking with a venue.

3.7 Group succession planning
Liz Burke provided a discussion paper on succession planning . Meeting supported recommendations 1, 2, 3 and 4. Option 2 was supported: "A call for membership of ALIAWest is sent out mid-year so that the new committee forms by the end of July. This gives the committee a couple of months before they need to submit a budget proposal for the coming year".

ACTION: Liz Burke

3.8 Nexus Study

Gillian Hallam has been contacted by Marg Allen about the survey results affecting WA members and she is interested. She will be in Perth in August and will run a workshop on the study. ALIAWest may be able to tack an event onto this workshop - possibly the annual professional brainstorm and nominations event

ACTION: Liz Burke

3.9 RFID

Carolyn was going to provide information on how people could donate to Alan Butters work on RFID if they were interested. Carolyn could not find the information on the web. No further action required.

4. New Business

4.1 Australian Documentary about Libraries

From Kerry Smith's proposal (email 21 June 2007). Meeting discussed being involved in trying to get Curtin University film students to make a documentary about libraries. Agreed idea was interesting but potentially a lot of work, and no-one at the meeting had the capacity to take it on. Will leave this proposal. There may be others in the wider library community that would like to be involved. Liz to respond to Kerry.

ACTION: Liz Burke

4.2 Review of the Library Board of WA

Meeting noted this is underway. ALIAWest will not take a role in facilitating this review as the facilitation role is the responsibility of the State Library of Western Australia.
