26 April 2006 meeting minutes

Minutes of ALIAWest meeting held on Wednesday 26 April 2006 at 5:30pm at the Grapeskin Wine Bar Northbridge

Attendance: David Daw-Smith, Nadine Gibbons, Bonnie-Rae Bruce, Jeanette Hill

Apologies: Sharon Coppin

Minutes of the previous meeting of 21 February 2006 were approved by Bonnie-Rae Bruce, and seconded by Jeanette Hill.

Correspondence:

  • Inwards: A message for Joanne Marchioro posted on wain regarding the @ Your Library campaign. Special libraries per se were not represented and Joanne made it clear that she was not coordinating the program for the special library sector.
  • Outwards: Report of ALIAWest activities sent to ALIA

Reports:

  • Treasurer: Report tabled current financial balance is $377.27. it appears all invoices from the icebreaker have now been paid.
  • Biblia Report: Biblia continues to be published on the web However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Bonnie to do this job and she needs to hand it over to another person. The person who takes it on needs to be able to either send large PDF by e-mail to ALIA or alternatively to burn it to CD and mail it to ALIA for loading to the web page. A further alternative is to make Biblia a 'sometimes' publication.
  • Past issues of Biblia and responsibility for archiving was also discussed. Whilst there is a requirement for serials to be lodged with the Batty Library, Bonnie will investigate if this is necessary as ALIA maintain archives of their web pages.
  • 2006 ALIA Conference -Registration info is now on the web, although some people will wait until the speakers are posted as Jeanette pointed out that some employers will not sponsor for events they perceive as not relevant.

Other business:

  • Icebreaker: David Daw-Smith has had excellent feedback from the icebreaker, not only from the library community, but also from within his own organisation. The Icebreaker increased the visibility of the library and the information was posted on his Intranet. He has also presented the talk to other interested parties including someone from the Northern Territory. Well done David.
  • Library Week Planning: Library week is to be 22-28 May. The Constitutional Centre is reluctant to make their rooms available for evening events. However, Cheryl Hamill (the librarian at Fremantle Hospital) was contacted and she is happy to hold the opening event there. David will liaise with Cheryl regarding the catering. More wine will need to be bought. David will check with Cheryl to see if there are alcohol restrictions. David will also ask Cheryl if she would like a health related theme/@ your library theme. Nadine will contact Michelle Brennand and ask her to talk. Bonnie will do the flyer when the theme is confirmed. Time to start 6.30. Cost agreed at $20 Members, $25 non-members, $10 Students.
  • Sharr Medal Planning: Do to time constraints it was agreed that it was impossible to present the Sharr Medal during Library Week this year, however Nadine has asked ALIA if it can be presented at CLICK06. Nadine is to present the idea formally to ALIA, but it has the support of the CLICK06 committee. Nadine to do a piece for Biblia on nominations for the Sharr Medal, then send out letters to University Cor ordinators.
  • ALIA the ALIA-West information on the ALIA web site needs to be updated. Nadine to do this. It was thought that there had been a page giving details of the Sharr Medal winners - but had not appeared to have been on the web site recently. This will also be investigated as it is seen as being a good promotional resource for the Medal.

Meeting closed at 6:45 pm.
Next meeting: No date set, will be after Library Week, and we will keep in touch via e-mail.
