ALIA WA Forum

Minutes of the meeting of the WA Forum held on Monday, 8 April 2002.

Present: B R Bruce, C Peters, B Bruce, P Hartree, S Hughes, J Allan.

  2. Minutes of previous meeting. Accepted: B Bruce, seconded: C Peters

  3. Matters arising from previous minutes
    5.1 Dinner to celebrate K Smith's acheivement
    Bobbie has contacted Curtin Club and made a booking for 24 May

    5.3 Camille is new CPD co-ordinator
    Bonnie to add Camille to e-mail distribution list for SW Forum and send spreadsheet of topics and speakers. [Done]

    5.4. Biblia
    Biblia now on WA Forum web page on ALIA site. Bonnie to check link is to current issue of Biblia [Done]
    Update Biblia Committee details: after discussion it was decided that these details should form part of the newsletter, and didn't need to be posted to the Biblia site.

  4. Correspondence.
    In: E-mails from Susanna Bruhn re update to booklet re groups: request for any changes to go to Patricia Lee before 19th April.
    Invitation to Bobbie Bruce to be presenter of the ALIA teacher-librarianship prize.
    Various e-mails to the OBBL list from National Office regarding: fees, budgets for the groups, insurance for group events.
    Out: Letter to Roger Armstrong of Infovision thanking him for sponsorship of Icebreaker function.

  5. Reports
    5.1 Convenors report
    Budget has been sent through to Camille to help with CPD organisation.
    Bobbie participated in a teleconference on funding guidelines for the groups. Some considerations were to standardise pay range for newsletter editors, ceilings for local presence officers and encourage several groups to share the local presence officers and share the funding for them.
    Regarding the e-mail from ALIA National Office about the group budgets, Bobbie noted that no new student awards would be funded as a matter of principal. ALIA already provides student awards to each of the Library studies schools, that is, TAFE, ECU and Curtin.

    5.2 Treasurers report
    Not tabled.

    5.3 CPD report
    Next Professional Reading Group has been organised for 17 April. Subject is paper presented by Ian McCallum to the 11th National Library Technicians Conference: 'Returning to Ithica'
    Phil Teece is visiting June/July. Camille will contact Cheryl Hamil offering support with organising a function for him to attend.
    CPD committee may run a brainstorming session in November to get more ideas for CPD.

    5.4 Biblia
    Aprils issue is still being put together. Hope to have it up soon.
    A.I. Bonnie to send photos from Sharr Medal presentation through for possible inclusion in Biblia. Please send content for Biblia as rich text format, or Word 97.

    5.5 Local Studies
    Local Studies are considering putting on a 'symposium' next year.
    Visit to Dept of Aboriginal Affairs very successful.

    5.6 South West Forum Working Group
    Meeting in Bunbury very successful. We met virtually all of SWeLL committee. We have a full program of topics, and will be contacting proposed speakers in the next month to confirm their availability. Minutes of meeting and details of next meeting will be sent to SW Forum e-mail distribution list.

    5.7 LIW
    Launch will be Monday at the Constitution Centre.
    Special Librarians Award will be presented at Launch
    Sue North is organising a simultaneous story time session.
    Hope to have a feature set of articles in Have a Go Newspaper: free newspaper distributed to all the public libraries.
    LIW committee is continuing to liaise with ALIA regarding help with press releases.
    Calender: Kelly Butun is chasing up group to post their activities to the calender.
    LIW Committee is considering giving a prize to the library that hosts the best LIW event.
    A.I. Bonnie to send Sam brochure re recycling program.

  6. Other business
    6.1 Elections.
    The AGM for ALIA WA Forum is proposed for 2nd Monday in July. All positions will be open for nomination. Nominations will open in May.
    Proposed that Office-bearers should consist of:
    Convenor
    Co-convenor
    Treasurer
    Secretary
    Publicity officer
    BR Bruce and P Hartree have agreed to be returning officers should the need arise.

    6.2 Website: list of activities
    Agreed to post only the current year.

    6.3 Sharr Medal
    Winners of the Sharr Medal are listed on the Branch Council website (now archived)
    AI Camille to arrange to move the list to the WA Forum site.

  7. Next Meeting
    5:30pm Monday 13 May 2002 in room 2.9 LISWA
    Meeting closed 7:00pm.
