Beyond the OPAC : future directions for Web-based catalogues

Monday 18 September, 2006
Invitation from Ebe Kartus, Chair, Australian Committee on Cataloguing On behalf of the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) I would like to invite you to the forthcoming ACOC seminar 'Beyond the OPAC : future directions for Web-based catalogues'. This full-day seminar will be ACOC's main professional development event for 2006 and will be of interest to all librarians and those responsible for the development of library catalogues and systems. It follows several very successful seminars in Sydney and Melbourne and again features a well known overseas speaker and a quality mix of Australian speakers.

The seminar will be held on the day prior to the commencement of the ALIA Click06 Conference and I hope that those of you who will be in Perth for the conference will consider coming a day early to attend the 'Beyond the OPAC' seminar.

Program summary
Although online catalogues have migrated to the Web environment, their scope, functionality, and displays have undergone very little change in recent years. If OPACs do not evolve in order to meet the demands and expectations of the next generation of users, they run the risk of being bypassed for search engines like Google. Cataloguing rules and OPAC functionality should work together in harmony to bring about the best results for our users. However, in many cases OPAC functionality and design do not exploit the full potential of the catalogue record as created by the cataloguer. Conversely, cataloguing rules carry the legacy of previous manifestations of the catalogue - in particular the card catalogue - and are not always compatible with the online product. This seminar will explore the ideas and issues to take the Web-based catalogue into the next stages of its development.

The seminar will feature a keynote address by Dr Martha Yee from the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Martha will also provide a presentation on applying FRBR principles to library catalogues. Other speakers will discuss various aspects of OPAC development including alternatives to the OPAC.

Full text of papers and PowerPoint presentations from the Seminar will be provided where possible.
