Admission to Associate Fellow

Congratulations are given to Pam Hyde for becoming an Associate Fellow of ALIA. This is a new CPD initiative and Pam is one of the first in Australia to gain this accreditation.

To be eligible for admission for the distinction Associate Fellow, an Associate or Library Technician member must:

  • be a current financial Associate or Library Technician member of the Association;
  • have been an Associate member or Library Technician member of the Association for at least five years;
  • be currently participating in the Association's Continuing Professional Development program and can demonstrate ongoing compliance for a minimum of five years. An Associate Fellow is required to maintain compliance in the Continuing Professional Development program.
  • be able to demonstrate professional/technical and personal knowledge and skills;
  • provide evidence of a significant degree of autonomy in decision-making in practice;
  • be currently employed in the Australian library and information sector or an allied sector.

Pam's early employment was spent in the hospitality industry where she has a Diploma in Hotel and Catering Institutional Management. Pam decided on a career change and studied a B.App Sc in Library studies at Curtin University. While studying she worked in public libraries before deciding to embark upon a career in the corporate sector.

Pam started on small projects, gradually building up to a consulting role and has been working in consulting/contracting for approx seven years, setting up libraries and doing project contracts. Flexibility and adaptability are the cornerstone in our chosen profession, requiring diverse skills encompassing many aspects of the information area, and this has certainly proved true in Pam's experience. Contract work has given Pam a great opportunity to work across a broad cross-section of the library and information environment. The diverse nature of projects often required accepting challenging positions with sole responsibility for the planning and organisation of the project, identifying the scope of a project and rapidly coming up to speed with requirements.

During the last 2½ years Pam has managed the corporate library and archives at Clough Engineering Ltd. Clough is involved in construction, mining, onshore/offshore oil and gas work and maintenance services contracting to industries. Her current duties range from archiving, disaster management, development of retention/disposal schedules, referencing, cataloguing, implementing library automations and systems migrations, as well as provision of electronic services through the company intranet. Pam is also active in promoting knowledge, information and archives services through involvement in workshops, committees and opportunities such as the 'success story' on the Inmagic website.

Pam maintains that the diverse nature of the core work and the geographic distribution of clients nationally and internationally makes every day challenging and rewarding.
