ALIA West
May 2004
Welcome to the president
We are very pleased to welcome Imogen Garner as the new president of ALIA and wish Imogen all success in her term of office. Imogen is the sixth ALIA president from Western Australia, the others being Mr F A Sharr elected 1969, Mr R C Sharman elected 1971, Mr R L Davis elected 1985, Dr D L Allen elected 1990 and Mrs Kerry Smith elected 1997. It is also fitting that Imogen will be presenting the Sharr Medal to the 2004 winner on 25 May at the Constitution Centre.
Imogen is well known to most having started her career as a library assistant at UWA shortly after leaving school. In 1977 she began working as a teacher-librarian in government secondary schools. Her career has shown this interest in education all the way through work in schools, the Education Department, the university sector to her appointment as university librarian at Curtin University of Technology in 2003. Imogen is a great example of the career path that can be had as a librarian. In her spare time Imogen is a keen Eagles supporter.
We also welcome Carol Newton-Smith and congratulate her on her election to the ALIA Board of Directors and farewell Deanne Barrett as she completes her term as a Board Member. Many thanks to Deanne for all the work she has done on behalf of Western Australian librarians over the past years. Carol is very excited about becoming a Board member. She describes herself as an 'adventurous cappuccino aficionado'. Her adventurous nature means she enjoys bushwalking, kayaking and cycles to works. Carol says she will go anywhere, by any means for a good cup of coffee.
