2003 WA Special Librarian Award

Nominations are now being called for the 2003 WA Special Librarian Award, to be presented at the opening of Australian Library Week on 12 May.

Nominees must be current ALIA personal members.

Help a colleague to be recognised for the exemplary level of commitment they show to both their clients and the WA Library profession.

Purpose of the award

  • Recognise an information professional who has demonstrated a high level of professional excellence and achievement in information services provision
  • Promote the profession of information services to the wider community
  • Encourage membership of the Australian Library and Information Association [ALIA] and active involvement in divisional activities.

The award serves to recognise a professional librarian with the following attributes:

  • High professional standards, including evidence of efficient and effective management practices.
  • A willingness to network and share knowledge with others.
  • High achievement in the promotion of information services.

The successful nominee will receive:

  • Recognition within the profession.
  • Their name inscribed on the Perpetual Trophy.
  • An Individual Trophy
  • Prize money of $250.00

Awards criteria

Nominees should address each of the selection criteria and give specific examples to demonstrate each. They include:

  • Professional/business skills
  • Technical skills

Professional/business skills

  1. Delivery of convenient, accessible and cost-effective information services that are aligned with the strategic direction of the organisation/client.
  2. Use of appropriate business and management skills to effectively communicate the importance of library and information services to senior management and effectively promote these services to the wider community.
  3. Networking and sharing knowledge with others

Technical skills

  1. Expert library technical skills.
  2. Specialised subject knowledge appropriate to the business of the organisation or client.
  3. Innovation and ability to apply new technologies and techniques to acquire, organise and disseminate information to organisation/client.

Rules for nomination for the Special Librarian Award

Nominee/proposer/seconder

  1. Only financial personal ALIA members are eligible for the award.
  2. The name of the award shall be the 'The Special Librarian Award.'
  3. No current committee member is eligible for the award.
  4. The nominee for the award must have both a proposer and a seconder. Candidates may self-nominate with a seconder.
  5. The proposer and seconder must submit a brief resume about the nominee to the awards committee.
  6. The nominee must provide a comprehensive resume, and a document addressing the selection criteria to the awards committee.
  7. It must be understood that the nominee may have to attend an interview with a panel.

Awards committee

  1. The awards committee shall consist of at least three members, one of these being the Convenor of the Knowledge and Information Specialists (WA Group).
  2. There shall be one member of the committee who is not a librarian and who represents the wider business community.
  3. The current award holder shall be invited to participate in the selection process as an award committee member.
  4. The award shall not be made to the same person more than once in a five year period.
  5. The awards committee has the right to defer the award if the selection criteria are not met.
  6. No correspondence shall be entered into with regard to the winner of the award and deliberations of the awards committee shall remain confidential.
  7. Advertisements on WAIN, Biblia and inCite will be placed to call for nominations for the award and subsequently to advertise the winner of the award.
  8. The awards committee shall reach a decision by 11 April 2003.
