ALIA West
December 2002
Convenor's report
2002 has been a year of consolidation for ALIA West. The committee was presented with a number of logistical and financial challenges that have been met and overcome. Activities were focused on what could be done with a reduced committee and budget. The commitment of the few willing to offer their time and energies to furthering the profession in Western Australia is embodied in the ALIA West Committee for 2002. The dedication and hard work by the Secretary, Treasurer, CPD officer and Biblia editors has provided the profession in WA with a continuing CPD program, events such as Library Week and the Sharr Medal that focus on development of the profession in WA and a channel for cross sectoral communication.
During 2002 the following events were held and attracted several hundred participants in the WA Forum activities. WA Forum did not make any surplus funds in 2002 and it moves into 2003 with a small deficit. We have 250 members at close of the year, ten of which are in states other than WA.
- March - Sharr Medal Presentation and Icebreaker - in conjunction with KISWA
- May - Library Week launch and Special Librarian of the Year Award - in conjunction with KISWA. Also in LIW 2002 a dinner in celebration of ALIA Fellowship award to Kerry Smith.
- September - Seminar on Industrial Relations issues during Phil Teece visit to WA
- September - SW Forum, sponsor for the Technicians Seminar held in Bunbury
- September - National Policy Congress Part 1, Western Australia
- Professional Reading Group - 4 times during 2002
I would like to thank the people who have individually made up the WA Forum Committee in 2002. To Trudy Parker (treasurer) and Bonnie Rae Bruce (secretary), thank you for your support, enthusiasm and hard work this year. Both have moved on to other things and places and we wish them well as they continue their life journey. Our new treasurer, Judy Allan, has capably stepped into Trudy's shoes. My thanks and appreciation for her willing participation in a difficult financial regime. Belinda Grayson has recently joined the committee as secretary to replace Bonnie Rae Bruce. Whilst replacing the indomitable Bonnie Rae is a daunting prospect Belinda brings speed, energy and enthusiasm to her new role that leaves the committee breathless.
Camille Peters has very ably performed the role of CPD officer for the WA Forum for 2002 with assistance from Jeanette Hill. The quality and regularity of the Professional Reading Group is a tribute to the steady perseverance and commitment of these two dedicated souls and I thank them for all their hard work on your behalf. Camille has worked hard to create a CPD program for 2003 and I commend it to you for your avid participation in the coming year.
Alethea Raspa and Camille Peters have produced Biblia, our WA communication tool on a regular basis through out the year. Seeking articles and participation is a demanding and thankless task that Alethea and Camille have pursued with determination and continuous success. I thank them for their perseverance and dedication. They have migrated Biblia to the ALIA website with success and ALIA members can find Biblia there through the Group page for WA Forum.
WA Forum committee meetings have been fortunate to have the regular participation of members from the Local Studies Group, the Technicians Group and our very own ALIA Director, Deanne Barrett, during 2002. Thank you to these hardy souls who have encouraged us to continue providing a service and helped WA Forum make decisions in 2002.
No committee works without the time and effort put in by willing members. The success of WA Forum in 2002 is due to the hard work and untiring efforts of the WA Forum committee and I thank them for their dedication and commitment to the profession in WA.
I look forward to 2003 and thank all my colleagues for their support and hard work.
