WA Library Technicians

Negotiating wise agreements
Ron Stokes' wealth of knowledge and experience in negotiation was illustrated vividly on Wednesday 18 September, when he passed on practical techniques, tips and tricks of successful negotiation, to a small gathering of WA Library Technician Group Mentoring participants.

Ron talked to the group in a charming lecture setting at Notre Dame University. The gathering learned the importance of preparing well for negotiation. Positional bargaining, negotiation style, and the basic elements of negotiation were also discovered. Separating the people from the problem, focusing on interests not positions and inventing options for mutual gain were other fundamentals of negotiating wise agreements that were revealed.

Library technicians need to be able to negotiate contracts, workloads, staff development review outcomes and many other complex agreements throughout their careers. Thanks to Claire Stokes for enlisting her busy Dad to pass on his wisdom and experience for the benefit of the Library Technician Group Mentoring members.

WALTGuMP in 2003

WALTG (WA Library Technicians Group) will be continuing the Group Mentoring Program for Library Technicians in 2003 and would like to hear from library technology students who have recently graduated, or will be graduating in 2003, who might be interested in participating in the program.

In 2002 a small but enthusiastic group met to analyse their learning needs and organised meetings on a variety of interesting topics including negotiation skills and advanced internet searching techniques.

An information evening for interested students and recent graduates will be held in November. Date and place to be advised. For further information about the program, contact Judy Smith or Judy Allan.

Important news from the WA Library Technicians group

At the end of September, the very industrious WALTG executive: Bonnie Bruce convenor, Brenda Ellen secretary and Karen Shackleton treasurer, retired from their positions. Brenda has been involved with the WALT group for many years now and has taken on major roles that include involvement in organising, both very successfully, the Fremantle National Library Technician's conference and more recently the Libraries Looking Out South West Forum that was held in Bunbury. Bonnie has also made a big commitment to WA Library Technicians. She was the driving force behind many successful functions held by the group in recent years and the instigator of the remarkable Libraries Looking Out, South West Forum. Karen has put much time into looking after the finances of the group, not such an easy job with a convenor as active as Bonnie has been.

A very big thank you goes to these people for their efforts and the tremendous outcomes that they have achieved. Many members who have worked hard alongside the outgoing committee have indicated they will do the same with the new team. This is greatly appreciated.

The new team comprises Judy Smith as the convenor, Claire Stokes as the secretary and Wendy Morris as the treasurer. Claire recently started work as the law library assistant at the Notre Dame University. Wendy is currently working at the ECU Churchlands Campus Library. She recently moved to Perth from Bunbury and comes with a background in private school libraries. Judy works in the Serials and Electronic Resources Unit of the Information Resources Access Management section at the University of Western Australia Library. She has worked in both client services and corporate services since joining the UWA Library in 1989.

The new committee looks forward to working with all WA Library Technicians in the coming year and invites them to please make contact with ideas, needs and issues. They also extend an invitation to all, to participate in meetings and events.
