United Kingdom
Check the Library category of the National Academic Mailing List Service at:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/
There's an e-mail list for every topic under the sun, including "Icelandic resources in UK academic libraries" (EGIL) and "registration of qualifiers to the Dublin Core Element Set" (DC-Registry), not to mention the standard lists on ILL, acquisitions, CPD, and so on. Those interested in CPD might want a look at LIS-CILIP-REG which is the British equivalent of aliaCPD.

United States
The American Library Association currently has 187 lists. General information about subscribing and unsubscribing is available at:
http://www.ala.org/membership/lists.html

Detailed information is available from the web interface which lets you subscribe, unsubscribe, or change subscription options once you have registered:
http://lp-web.ala.org:8000/

Special Library Association
http://www.sla.org/content/interactive/lists/index.cfm
Like the ALA, you can use the web interface to join or leave lists.
