ALIA West
August 2002CPD columnThis month we will be holding a Professional Reading Group meeting to discuss Michael Gorman's paper: "Human Values in a Technological Age." Information Technology and Libraries 20.1 (2001): 4-11. This paper is also available at: http://www.lita.org/ital/2001_gorman.html. September is a very busy month as we have CAVAL's indexing seminars, the South West Forum, Phil Teece's visit, and the Australian Copyright Council's seminars. The South West Forum has an interesting programme at a very low price so I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity for some CPD and an excuse to visit Bunbury. WA Forum and KISWA are holding a joint function with Phil Teece and a speaker from DOCEP on the 18th (full details are on page 6), and the Academic and Research Libraries group are arranging their own function. It is sometimes difficult to find suitable venues for functions so if anyone knows of a free/low cost venue, I would like to hear about it. The criteria are: able to fit 20 or more, allowed to bring in food and drinks, parking available nearby, not noisy, and in the CBD or a suburb relatively close to Perth (Quinns Rock is definitely out!). As for more expensive venues, if anyone can recommend particular cafes, restaurants, or hotels as suitable for functions based on the food, quality of service, or reasonable price, I would be grateful for the information. Currently I have one CPD committee member and WA Forum still needs new committee members. We NEED more people to get involved. There are several hundred librarians and library technicians in WA and 7 ALIA groups, yet only about 30 people on ALIA committees in WA (even less when you consider that some committee members are on two or three committees). This is not a sustainable situation and will lead to less CPD activities when groups fold due to the lack of new committee members. Please consider being involved. Your association needs you.
